hahaha, all this detroit love in the thread is giving me a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

i honestly would love living downtown, or near the campus section of the city. lot of rich history in that city, if they spent the money detroit would be such a great place. outside of the downtown area is pretty miserable though, wish the city could afford to make itself look better. tons of great areas in metro-detroit though.

everytime someone mentions Long Island i think of that episode of Seinfeld in which Elayne's friend keeps saying is that most anoying of voices, "Elayyyynnne, you gotta have a baby!! Elayne, Move to Long Island already and have a baby!"

then later on elayne and her boyfriend are talking about having kids and she goes, "What's so special about having kids, anyone can do it?" and her boyfriend says, "It's been done" to which elayne replies, "Oh, it's been done to death"

also theres the episode where Kramer picks up Jerry and Elayne from that party in Long Island after George leaves with the car to have sex with the fur-wearing woman...and drives 65mph back to NYC on the long Island expressway with the top down on his convertible, and Jerry is sick for like a week afterwards...good stuff

pretty much anyone who's watched Seinfeld a lot, and hasn't actually been to NYC much, already has a pre-conceived negative idea about Long Island.

My top 2 were outside the US thanks. Have to say though that it would be really hard to give up US cities for some of the ones you have listed. Have you ever been to them?

No, unfortunately not, but most of those cities were chosen for their history (which I love) and based on research I have done on them. I will be going across the big lake asap tho and I guess at that point I may revise my opinions, but I doubt I would choose any American cities except possibly Seattle which I went to once many years ago and thought was quite pretty at the time.

Truth be known I doubt I would enjoy living in any city even New Orleans Pre hot tub (I like that I will definately file that aqway for use later) I would be most happy living away from people altogether as long as I had my high speed internet access.

doesn't it seem a little odd that almost all your choices are the capitol cities of the nations in question?

one would think that if you had researched other cities in those countries, you wouldn't find this to be the case, since capitol cities are often bastions of tourist "History Lite" rather than accurate cultural experiences as well as being more prone to globalization, such as having McDonalds and KFC popular spots in downtown Tokyo or seeing Red Bull on the drinks menu at a pub in London kind of kills the experience for me.

I think you'de be better off looking at places like Melbourne, AUS or Brighton, England (theres a reason Fatboy Slim named a song after it) where the culture shock is likely to hit you in the face like a brick wall if you want

what kind of ending would you have thought was better?

pretty much any ending that ended with any kind of sentimentality would have been contrary to the theme of the entire series

Seinfeld was tough to make an ending for, but I still think what they came up with sucked considering the hype.

They should have finished it with them being rich and famous and I would have been amused. A good ending was Roseanne. I know not everyone here is white trash like me, but that was a great show with a fabulous ending.

I don't remember Roseanne's ending. Didn't she do a real serious show about writing a book and what happened to everyone, and Dan died?

Yes...and she said that she had written everything pretty much the same but a little bit different. Firstly, Becky wasn't with Mark, she was with David. As well as Darlene with Mark. And also she stated that Dan never cheated on her. That Dan had died at Darlene's wedding and she had thought to herself that she would prefer him to have cheated than to have died.

I cried so hard when she said that.

They never really won the lottery either.

roseanne also had a lot of "sentimental" moments, and a major theme of the show was poverty and the (funny) circumstances it sometimes creates. Thus, them winning the lottery at the end was a pretty fitting end since it summed up the show's themes

In seinfeld one of the major themes is laughing at other people's misfortunes. I can't think of another show where the writers were able to make people laugh at things which should be pretty morbid, like accidently killing your fiancee with poisonous stamp glue on your wedding invatations. Or forcing someone to break their Kosher vows by eating lobster as a jewish person to get even for gossiping about one's girlfriend.

Thus, i'd argue that while you may not have felt "satisfied" with it, the final episode of seinfeld is pretty apt to the theme of the series. Jerry and George's TV series (a terrible parody of the actual show) is bought by NBC and they are about to finally make it out of new york and the apartment. However, their private jet nearly crashes, and by the end of the show they are arrested and jailed for violating a "good samaritan law"...fitting irony since the entire series has arguably been based on the idea of how entertaining being a bad samaritan can be. The series ends the same way it began, with Jerry, Elayne, Kramer, and George sitting around debating the comedic details of everyday life...the final shot is kramer hopping on one leg trying to get water out of his ear.

Any kind of "happy" ending or one that tried to ascribe some underlying value to the show would have been far worse, in my view. Was the last show the funniest episode of Seinfeld? not by a long shot, but personally i found it fitting.

Comparing Roseanne/poverty/lottery and Seinfeld/rude/poetic justice was a very good observation. I am going to have to give you a C though, since you didn't capitalize Roseanne.

Never seen an episode of Seinfeld.. most people I know just adore the show, I've tried to watch 5 minutes of it before I have to walk away. I just thought it was horrible.. I was a big Friends fan though.

I have yet to find something more annoying than the 3 fags on that show.
