Are we talking about the same game? 'Cause the game I saw featured St. Louis' best pitcher at home against a banged up Pettit, and the Cards still only won by two runs. I still think St. Louis will win, but it wasn't exactly a blowout last night...

The game was never as close as the score made it look.

When I say asskicking, I do not just mean score. To measure an asskicking by just a score misses all of the ways they kicked that teams ass.

-Carpenter outpitched Petitte. Shutout into the 7th. Sixteen groundball outs.

-A perfectly executed suicide squeeze. (Houston was in an almost identical situation yet failed to bring a run home) This play is nowhere near as easy as they made it look.

-Sanders made a leaping catch of what could have been a Mike Lamb home run in the sixth inning.

-Abraham Nunez fielded a grounder with bases loaded and made an great throw to home to keep the Astros in their place.

Sure, I'm biased as hell, but the bottom line is this Cardinal team outclasses, outplays, and is by far a superior team than this "wildcard" team that didn't even have enough "oomph" to win their division. Even though the Cardnals were without Sanders, Walker, Rolen, and Molina for various parts of the year.

No matter, though, because in todays baseball, you get a consolation prize! You don't have to be the best!

One weakness I saw last night was with the closer position. I don't know wtf has happened to Isringhausen.

With Pettit on one good leg, that shouldn't have been a surprising outcome.

-A perfectly executed suicide squeeze. (Houston was in an almost identical situation yet failed to bring a run home) This play is nowhere near as easy as they made it look.

So, the game could easily have swung by up to two runs had Houston pulled off a difficult play, or had the Cards not made the same play?

-Sanders made a leaping catch of what could have been a Mike Lamb home run in the sixth inning.

So the game could easily have been even closer?

-Abraham Nunez fielded a grounder with bases loaded and made an great throw to home to keep the Astros in their place.

And again, you're relying on a great play to prevent the game from being even closer. Sounds to me like you've made quite a case for the game being closer than the score indicated. A two run win, at home, isn't something that would inspire that sort of confidence in me, particularly given the extraordinary plays you enumerated that went into preserving that win. Had a handful of them gone the other way, it sounds like the Astros could easily have won Game 1.

Yeah they could have if they had one ounce of the raw power the Cardinals have.

Instead they come up short because...they got their ass kicked by the talent of the -better- team.

Yep. I forgot to figure in one game for the fucked up umps.

Fuck Houston. I read today that that isn't even the real team. It's a by-committee team made up of New Orleans refugees that out-played the real Astros in a camp they held.

That meant that the Cardinals are getting their asses whipped by a bunch of refugees.

2-1 in a game the umpires fucked over is hardly an asswhipping.

Hard to score when they call a high inside brushback pitch a strike.
