I used to say that until I realized this will eventually lead to all of our good players going to Japan so they can make 300 million a year.

There is no way the MLB Players Association will ever let them have one now. Baseball will always be second fiddle to the NFL due to this.

Sports markets dictate that you need a way to equalize the playing field, since there will always be a disparity of cash. Granted, spending does not equal wins, but not spending usually will equal mediocrity, and so there needs to be a way of ensuring at least some level of parity in regards to free agent markets.

Is it that hard to find 30 ultra rich baseball fans to just go spend-crazy on their favorite teams?

Take teams away from the fuckers that don't want to spend any money and have every team pull a Yankees type free-agent binge.

Unfortunately, every team is not located in a market with the type of revenue the Yankees enjoy, so what you are proposing is a shoddy business model based on losing cash.

Why not also remove their anti trust exemption, and let mirror leagues pop up everywhere?
Have one with a Salary cap, and one with an FFA that can have 2 or 3 teams dominate forever and see which ones are more popular?

Come on Lyion, don't play stupid here. There are easilly 50-60 fucking cities out there that could and would get behind a baseball team 110% and support it enough to keep it economically on par with the rest.

There maybe more than 30 cities that would get behind a baseball team 110% but probably none that can generate revenues like New York does for the Yankees.

I don't recall whining. I just said pull a Yankees style binge. IOW, ALL teams go out buying instead of just the ones where the owners decided to open their checkbooks.

the problem is that the teams that spend less than 50% of the top tier teams will never win, and likely, never make the playoffs

obviously there will be exceptions now and again when 1 particular team gets hot for a year

No, there really aren't. As proof, I offer you... Major League Baseball, where they can't find two other cities that can keep a team economically on par with the Yankees, and can't find thirty cities that can keep a team profitable.

Baseball needs to add some clout to the luxury tax. Then they don't have to make any changes on a fundamental level. Teams who really want to spend a lot then pay heavy taxes, and more or less submit themselves to sharing profits, even though it's not labeled as that sort of system. And, teams who don't want to spread the wealth, don't have to, but maintain some sort of parity in spending.

I think there should be a minimum salary cap of 40 million. Not every team can afford to spend out the ass, but most of the bottom end teams can afford to spend more than they do. And if not, there are cities that can support that kind of payroll. Not to mention a team in Mexico wouldn't be a bad idea. Mexico City would be more than capable of supporting a MLB team. Not to mention mexicans actually like baseball, unlike those dirty bastard in Montreal.

While Mexico City might support a team, it'd be a bad place to put one. You think Coor's Field in Denver is bad for pitchers cause of altitude, Mexico City is 2000 feet higher up. Talk about skewing HR statistics....

Anyway, Baseball definitely needs to do something to make the playing field more level. Teams like the A's with a low payroll CAN succeed, but only with a brilliant GM and talent scouts, who can find young talent nd hold onto them while they're cheap. Of course, eventually they go byebye to big money elsewhere. You think the A's wouldn't have loved to still have Mulder & Hudson & Tejada? They just couldn't afford them.

Actually attendance for major league baseball is higher now than 20 years ago. The numbers have been steady for the last 10 years or so. Look here : http://www.kenn.com/sports/baseball/mlb/ml_numbers.html

However, what I see happening with baseball is a lot of young American kids now opt to play basketball or football as they get older. The league will eventually be compose of players from latin america.

If baseball ever adopt a salary cap system, they should have one with hard cap. Unlike basketball where you get low level exception, middle level exception, and can sign your own free agents to go over the cap.

if they implemented a cap system like the NHL did (minumum and maximum caps) it would probably work ok

I still think the NFL is probably the best system to try and emulate
