RENO, Nev. - The mayor of Las Vegas has suggested that people who deface freeways with graffiti should have their thumbs cut off on television.

“In the old days in France, they had beheadings of people who commit heinous crimes,” Mayor Oscar Goodman said Wednesday on the TV show “Nevada Newsmakers.”

Goodman said the city has a beautiful highway landscaping project and “these punks come along and deface it.”

“I’m saying maybe you put them on TV and cut off a thumb,” the mayor said. “That may be the right thing to do.”

Goodman also suggested whippings should be brought back for children who get into trouble.

Another panelist on the show, state university system regent Howard Rosenberg, said cutting off the thumbs of taggers won’t solve the problem and Goodman should “use his head for something other than a hat rack.”

You can hold a can of spray paint just fine without a thumb provided your hands are large enough. Getting rid of their index finger would be a much better punishment.

Not true. People are born with deformed hands, without hands, or without arms altogether and they get by. I saw a show about one lady who was born without arms and she used her feet for everything. They showed her slicing a tomato. Crazy to watch, but she held the knife with her feet and sliced it up as efficiently as if she had used her hands.

Anyway, that's a little extreme, but they can survive without thumbs. There's a lady working in our local grocery store who has deformed hands. Instead of five fingers, she has two giagantic fingers that look like a lobster claw, and she can scan and hand change out just fine. Yeah, it may suck for them, but I guess they should've thought about that before being little shit heads and defacing property that doesn't belong to them. I don't believe cutting off their thumbs is the solution, but my point is that it doesn't automatically make them unable to work.

I do believe the best deterrent to crime is a swift and unescapable punishment. It doesn't have to be severe, it just has to be THERE. Maybe a fine or something, but punish them quickly and don't let them get away with it. The thought that they are likely to get away from it is what keeps these stupid kids committing the crime in the first place.

I am all for beating children. This country would do a 180 if children and women, while we're on the subject started receiving regular beatings for their misbehavior.
