Anyone use these air purifiers? What about other brands, like the Oreck?

Its real dusty up here in SLC, everything in the house gets caked with dust in short order. Plus we have a cat and a huge hairy chewbacca dog that leave dander and stuff all over.

Really would like to do something about the air quality in our place. These things are freakin expensive though. Are they worth the investment?

not good for pet problems... they really just clean up the smell from like smoking etc.

Don't know what to tell you.

I've got a couple of them, as a gift from a well off in-law, but either way.

They work great for things like smoke, dust, pet dander, etc, they don't work against larger particles like pet hair or pet dandrif/dry skin. I've got one upstairs and down, clean them (well the wife cleans them) about once a week to 10 days or so, they are nearly always coated with nasty black shit.

BTW, neither of us smoke (cept me on the funny stuff) and never in the house.

Now the test it failed against was the wife and I are allergic to cats but we found a stray, wanted to keep it. Both of these units on full blast couldn't remove enough alergine from the air to reduce the symptoms so the cat had to go. I'm not clear if it was "soley" pet dander or if it was just the hair cuz the cat left hair EVERYWHERE.

The other thing is if you have poor air flow in the home, then these may not work so well, they themselves (the sharper image ones) don't have fans. The orec I demoed had a fan but made any room it was in smell like ozone.

Just my 2qtrs :p

EDIT
was going to add that many of these can be "demoed" or have a return policy, may have to eat shipping but better then the couple+ bills you'd have to fork over to buy one.

stay away from the ionizer ones

all they do is make the dust and shit stick to walls, ceiling, furniture, etc instead of floating in the air

you want a purifier or similar, one that pulls air thru a filter

Contact a reputable licensed heating and a/c contractor in your area and see what they have to offer. Getting your duct work cleaned prior to having them install anything will also improve things greatly.

I farted on an air purifier once in sharper image and all that happened was everyone left the store in disgust.

these things are a crock of shit.

Which brings up a good point...

In my house, I have an air exchanger, an electronic air cleaner, a whole house fan, and an ultraviolet light system on my duct work. We had a cigar party in the house and less than an hour later a non-smoker came in. She couldn't smell any smoke in the house and had no idea wehad cigars in here.

God damn...why not hire some midgets to live in the ducts with swiffers while you're at it?

You can believe it or not but many of the most high end residential filters are not "cotten"/fiber based or whatever the material is you buy from home depot.

Many are ion based and the filters are 5inch thick metal casings that have the ion wires and such weaved througout (as is mine at home). It is recommended you wash them in a dishwasher something like 4 times a year.

The fiber filters can be better though and some of the 3m types capture 99% of molicules(sp) but to say ION is bunk, well the Heating and Cooling giants of the world would disagree.

you misread me, or maybe I wasn't clear

I'm talking about the little portable ionizers that you plug into an outlet in a room

that shit just ionizes particles and makes them stick to walls, furniture etc

an ionized filter is completely different

What about portable midgets you can plug in... How do those clean the air?
