Where did your parents

Postby Tuggan » Wed Dec 07, 2005 8:30 pm

Where did your parents work while you guys were all growing up?

For me, My dad has worked for Ford all my life. He was the primary bread winner in the family as my mom basically did small time jobs to help with some of the bills. Hes going on 30 years, so fortunately for him he can retire at will and wont be targetted in the next wave of layoffs. So I grew up involved in the American auto industry, just like everyone I knew growing up. Some of my favorite memories as a kid was getting to go on the yearly tour of the Rouge plant where the Mustang (obvioulsy my favorite car as a kid) was built. Just about every kid at school had a mom, or dad, or aunt/uncle employed by one of the big 3. We never had arguments about Japan vs USA, it was always GM vs Ford vs Chrysler... sometimes it would even come to throwin blows in the younger gradeschool years. So its pretty much in the blood around these parts, like a religion, 10-15 years ago it was practically the law that you drove an American brand. Still today American brands dominate the roads, which is apparently not the case in many parts of the country. I guess both the coasts are rather ass backwards in their car choices ;)

Reason I ask where your parents worked while you were kids, is because it blows my mind to see some of the comments people leave in these threads about the auto industry. Would help give me some perspective on everyones attitudes.

My father worked at Oregon Health Science University for 35 years before he retired. He worked in transportation, ie he wheeled patients around and operated the elevator. Before that he worked in thier kitchen mopping the floors.

I'm very proud of my father because he has cerebral palsy as does my mom, and he worked his ass off never accepting a dime from any goverment department. My mom was a stay at home mom. There was a write up on my parents in the Oregonian about 33 years ago.. I wonder if I can dig in the archives and find it to post.

P.S. He also owns his own home and did the majority of home improvements. It's always been a bitch watching though, seeing someone whose brain is at 150% while the body doesn't want to co-operate at all.

My dad worked for a now non-existant government agency called the Health Systems Agency that regulated hospitals, including nurse/patient ratios, #'s of beds, etc. After he left there, he worked for a number of years as the #2 administrator at a hospital here in the bay area. Now, he's a consultant. My mom stayed home while my brother and I were young, then got a job teaching English as a 2nd language for a few years, before moving on and working as a Real Estate agent.

Mom was a nurse but became stay home mom full time before I was born. =)

My father worked for Sony as head of their logistics group, threatened to quit, met with the president of Sony in Japan, ended up quitting and going to work for Phillips where he works to this day. As side projects, he has been buying single family homes all across the nation, dividing them into multiple unit apartments, rehabbing them, and renting them.

My mother is an artist & real estate agent.
Stepfather has been a machinist, currently working for Nestle R&D.

My dad was a big wig for the evil empire known as Wal Mart, he was responsible for quite a few stores through out the US. He retired in 2001 at the age of 51 because he said Wal Mart leadership turned for the worse after Sam Walton died and he didn't want to be a part of it any more.

My mother was a special education teacher for quite a while then she received a promotion to become an administrator in charge of special education for the district. She has been promoted several times since and is now the director of special education for a state that will remain un-named.

My Dad worked at nuclear power plants when I was growing up. He never went to college for it, but was a nuke in the Navy. He wrote procedures. My dad is the smartest man I know. He would make a killing on jeopardy. About 10 years ago or so he took the voluntary lay off package at TU Electric where he worked, and then became a contractor writing procedures all over the U.S. about a year ago he took a job at Texas State Universities systems so he could stay at home with my mother.

My mom was a secretary all her life and finally got her degree at like age 45 and now is a secretary, go figure.

My mother was and always will be a nurse. She loves helping people. Various nursing jobs from retirement homes(coffin liner sanctuaries) to running a health dpet for a local school in MO.

My dad worked at Texas Intruments from before I was born until 2001. He did something with the chemicals and solvents. He quit there and switched to Air Liquide. Same job I believe. Then he retired at 52, got bored at home and now stocks the dairy at Walmart in his hometown. He likes it there more than his bigger paying jobs.

My mom was a dental hygentist for ever and ever. Then she got laid off at her last office and started working at Triquent Semiconductors. She ships computer and machinery parts. Her twin works there too.

I think 9 out of 10 people I know, whose parents lived here for awhile, have worked for Texas Instruments. My grandmother and grandfather also worked there.

My dad was a welder. Worked for Chevy and Terex. Owned his own welding shop for many years. He sold sailboats and did construction. He now sells surplus items and store returns.

My mom was a housewife for many years. Then she ran the kitchens in a nursing home. She's currently working part-time at my brothers video store.

My Dad has had so many different jobs it's worthless to list them. (He's a slackass now and hasn't had a job in months, I hate his lazy ass)

My Mom was district manager for Friendly's, now she attends to a paraplegic man and his home. (Quite frankly don't know what it's called.)
