Protecting our borders is underhanded

AP NEWS
MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Mexico's foreign secretary Monday leveled his country's sharpest criticism yet at U.S. proposal for a fence along parts of its southern border, condemning it as "stupid" and "underhanded."

In a radio interview, Luis Ernesto Derbez said U.S. legislators who approved the bill were turning a blind eye to the contributions millions of migrants from Mexico and elsewhere make to America's economy and culture.

"It's a law that looks underhanded to everybody ... stupid," Derbez said.

On Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 239-182 in favor of an immigration enforcement bill, which includes a proposal to build 700 miles of border fencing along parts of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

Under the measure, soldiers and police would help stop people sneaking across, and employers would have to check the legal status of their workers.

Derbez said he was confident the bill would not make it past the U.S. Senate, which he said was not as easily swayed as the House.

Reacting Sunday to the bill's approval, Mexican President Vicente Fox said "this wall is shameful," and called the plan hypocritical for a country made up of immigrants.

is there anyone here who thinks that this is a bad idea? putting up a fence so they actually have to request to work here? I disagree with the fence idea. Unless it is electrified.

I can think of better things for my tax dollars to be spent on than trying to curtail the avocado picking workforce.

Change the laws so being born here doesn't guarantee citizenship and audit business more often so we can find illegal workers.

Putting up a huge fence seems to me as anti American as one can get, but maybe that's just me.

im with ya in that aspect. walls/fences=bad bad bad. spend the money we would use creating a massive fence on more border patrol officers, and better training at border crossings.

these fuckers already have tunnels from mexico into someones basement, who gets paid phat cash to go along with it. a fence will do nothing but cause greater tension between the countries.

Not like im too fucking worried about the Mexican army. They cant carry guns but you piss them off and they will dig a huge trench around your city.

Perhaps give the Illegals something to do if caught. Make them build the fence.

haha, the mexican army cant even fend off drug warlords. thats not what i was meaning by tension between the usa and mexico.

as is right now, all mexicans want to do is come here and try to make a living. piss them off and we'll have mexican Osama bin Burritoz trying to sneak over to do some harm instead of 'good'.

I'd like the government to start addressing the elephants in the room. Notably, the illegal immigrants that we need to run our country and the marijuana that they import. Legalize both and regulate/tax them, and quit pretending we don't need them.

Labbats i have no problem with recognizing them but frankly there is a word for them ILLEGAL. Make the permits to enter the country for work more easily applied and obtained but make sure they know if they come accross on some midnight desert trek they get shipped home. Preferrably after a good whippping.

As for the illegal immigrants, Ralf is right that certain areas of the country have turned into shitholes mainly due to having 25 of them crammed into one house like beans in a burrito. southern Cal is a fucking mess, certain areas of texas look like Mexico City and the slums where they live are getting worse. Of the 11million illegals the government estimates about 89 percent are from Mexico. The rest most likely are the cannucks sneaking across to get there teeth capped or something.

Yes we need alot of these mirgrant workers but we dont need them illegaly. We have enough problems with lax borders in this country. All we need is some sand jockey with a bomb sneaking accross the border like a pot hungry hippie heading for the nearest taco bell and we are screwed.

How many of you fence critics own a home without one? I wonder if Fox has a 10' brick wall around his home like most affluent mexicans do. Talk about underhanded and "shameful".
