So. What do the worst teams in the NFL.....

Post by Kramer »

Need to draft and trade for....

Texans - Linemen primarily and maybe a cheaper QB (Carr will get 8 million next season) will open up some cap room

San Fran - ?

Green Bay - ? Besides Favre needing to take his seat on the bench or in his living room for good

Arizona - (but who really cares, huh?) is Emmit still their starting running back....
Mindia is seriously the greatest troll that has ever lived.

Lineman is the big thing the Texans need. They dont need Bush, they have Dominique Davis that is a star waiting to bloom. As far as the Quarterback spot, i would say keep Carr. This kid has an excellent arm, and I belive that he just needs a line where he doesnt get sacked 7 times a game.

The problem with Carr is that he is gun shy. He is constantly swarmed on as soon as he snaps the ball. He has a strong enough arm, and can make some good plays. He is still to young to give up on.

Green Bay really isnt that bad. They have scored as many points as they have given up (up until Monday night anyway). When you lose as many starters as they have, Favre is putting it on his shoulders to make plays. He is forcing the ball to make something happen. He still has acouple of years left. For their needs......Defense Defense Defense. First 3 rounds should see 3 defensive players picked.

Arizona.....Well Arizona is not as far off as people think. The defense is ok, passable right now. The reason they give up so many yards is their offense always leaves them in horrible situations. The biggest problem in Arizona is the flip flopping of Quarterbacks. Pick one and stick to it. They will probably pick between 2-6th in the draft. If they are in the 2nd , 3rd or 4th spot expect them to pick Lienert. Good solid NFL ready QB. They will bring Warner back as a backup, they have a potentially dangerous running back in JJ Arington, they have High powered veteran recievers and a solid core on defense. Look for them to be much better next year.

    49ers...........

Well #1 problem is we need to see what Alex Smith can do. The entire team hinges on that. He looks alot like Eli Manning did in his first year. Dear in the headlights anyone? Hopefully the offseason will be kind to him, and he gets his head straigthend out. Will Bush be a 49er? I think so, i think them or the Jets could benefit from him the most. Barlow, Hicks and Gore as your running backs while passable, are not going to get you to the playoffs. Each back is a very good Backup, but not a good starter. Adding Bush will really help there.

Defense is actually ok in SF. They will be better this year, as they have alot of young players playing better of late. They should be an 8-8 team next year. To solve all of the Niners problems now, i say get rid of the Yorks, and things will instantly get better.

Nolan has them going in the right direction i think.

Lets see, the next line of teams to dissect. Baltimore, Jets, and Lions.

Baltimore has just been injury plagued all season. Jamaal Lewis has under achieved as has Kyle Boller. I think Boller can be a NFL star, i think he might have had his breakthrough game this past monday night on the big stage. Jamaal will be Franchise tagged and will be back with the Ravens. Lewis is only 26, and now has his person problems behind him (hopefully). Defense was decimated by injuries including losing Ray Lewis. Anytime you lose your team leader like Lewis your team will suffer. Needs, a breakout wide reciever, a new Safty (to replace Dieon after this year), maybe some offensive line help. They are starting to age there.

    The Jets......

Jets were a playoff team at the beggining of the year. Needs? Well they are not as far off as people believe either. The loss of Pennington was bad.....real bad for this team. I see Leinhart or Vince Young (if he comes out) going here. They are in bad need of a QB, and there is no gaurantee Pennington will be back, or if he is back being effective. 2 Rotator Cuff injuries are normally enough to make someone hang up the cleets. They also need to draft a Running back. Curtis Martin can still do it, even though he was injured this year. This guy is 1 year removed from 1600 yard rushing season. I would pick up a RB this year in the first or second round, and let him learn behind Martin.

    Next up the Lions.........

Oh my, this team has more holes than swiss cheese. First off they need to figure out what they are doing with their QB situation. Are they going to keep Harrington, or let him go? If they keep him, they need to get him in and increase his arm strength. There should be NO offseason for Harrington this year. If they dont keep him, they may try to trade up and take Leihnart or Young. They also need to address the running back issue. Kevin Jones, everyone thought he would be the answer. Im not sure if its the system or the back. You need your RB to get 25 touches a game, he was averaging 14 i think.

Fireing Millen would be good for the franchise. The fans want him gone, he has done a horrible job, get him out of their. You are affecting fan support by keeping a man who has done shit since he got there. When they look at a new coach next year (no Jauron is not the answer) you need someone that is going to get the ball to the wide recievers. Lions QBs have been horrible about that. You spend 3 years picking WRs as your top picks and none of them get the ball. 1 of those wide receivers will not be back with the team next year.

Bills remind me alot of the Jets. They need to figure out if Holcom or Losman is going to be the QB of the future and let that person play, regardless of what happens. If those two are not going to be your starters of the future, draft a QB that could be your franchise QB. The bills have Mcgahee, a very solid RB. They have Moulds (maybe not after this year), so they have 2/3 of the core you need for a contending franchise.

Defense needs Tkao Spikes back, and a shut down corner, and they should be set there. Their D really isnt their problem, its the fact that there has been a QB carosoul for them.

Well if the Draft started today (lots can change) this is how the picks would go.....

    1. San Francisco 2-12

    2. Houston 2-12

    3. NY Jets 3-11

    4. New Orleans 3-11

    5. Green Bay 3-11

    6. Oakland 4-10

    7. Buffalo 4-10

    8. Detroit 4-10

    9. Tennessee 4-10

    10. Arizona 4-10

The reason teams are ahead of others with the same record, is the draft tie break is based on strength of schedule.

So by this list here is what i surmise will be the draft picks as it stands today.

SF will pick Reggie Bush here. He is the man that everyone wants, i dont think you trade this pick at all. He is the best position player to come out of College football in awhile, and should make an imediate impact in the NFL.

Hou's pick is alittle different. They have quite afew options. With the other teams behind them, they may want to move down the draft alittle and acuire another 2nd round pick. Their main focus should be an OT. The best in the draft is D'Brickashaw Ferguson , a Senior OT out of Virginia. This guy will really help shore up that line. While i (and many sports polls) have him as the 3rd best player in the draft, he will most likely not be chosen before #8. So if im Hou i trade my #2 overall pick to the New Orleans Saints for their first round (#4 overall) and their second round (#36 overall)

The saints will bite, because they need a QB, as do the jets with the number 3 pick. This jumps them ahead to get Leihnart. its good for Hou because they still have an early first round and now an additional second round early pick.

So The saints are now in the number 2 spot and Draft Leihnart. No surprise or Reason needed here. He is the best QB to come out of the draft since Manning, and he is NFL ready to start next year.

The Jets missing out on Leinhart now turn their focus to Vince Young (if he enters wich im sure he will, if not they might take a look at Cutler out of Vanderbilt). VY is now in NY wich is a good fit for him.

Fourth pick now with the Texans. They draft D'Brickashaw Ferguson the best OT in the draft.

Fifth pick is now in GB's hands. They dont need a QB (favre and Rogers) RB situation is pretty good (Green, Gado), so they need to look at defense, Linebacker esspecially. AJ Hawk is a stud out of Ohio state, and will fit in well with the scheme of the packers. Look for him to go in the fifth slot.

Sixth pick goes to Oakland. Oh boy lots of problems here. They need a QB badly, and the top 2 QBs (assuming Quinn stays in ND wich is likely), are already picked. I go with Jay Cutler out of Vanderbilt. He would be a good fit with the raiders that are already established in the run (lamont jordan) the pass (Moss, and Porter). They need a QB and Collins nor Tuiosisoppo is the answer.

Seventh pick is Buffalo. Again some holes all around this team. Their Draft pick depends on if they think they have their QB already. If they do go with Holcom or Losman (or Kerry Collins maybe?!?!?) I would go with Jimmy Willliams a great CB out of Virginia Tech. He could really add alot to this defense and start imediatly this next year.

8th pick goes to Detroit. I think Harrington gets one more year in D town. They have recievers (sort of) and kevin jones is just not working out at RB. I think they draft DeAngelo Williams a senior RB out of Memphis. This should help......that and Firing MIllen.

9th pick is Tennesee. I think they go with Mcnair one more year and focus on some defense. Mario Williams a DE out of NC state makes alot of sense for this team.

10th pick goes to AZ. They are a QB away from a good team. Unfortuanatly outside of the 3 QBs that have been picked the pickings are slim. Look for them to try and acuire a free agent QB (Collins, maybe Mcnair) or stick with Warner for 1 more year. They dont need a RB or WR, and O lineman are pretty much all second round picks that are left. I think you go Defense. Demeco Ryans Sr. OLB out of Alabama should be money for this team.

Those are what i invision how the top 10 going. What do you think?

If the 49ers get the first pick, they should definitely draft Bush. He is the best player around. Then next year when camp opens, the competition for starting halfback will be between Gore and Bush.

    9ers

    WRs
    OL
    DL

thats it... they have 3 decent running backs.. alex is ok but he has no one to throw to so.

Defense is actually very good if they were injured cause they were on the field too much

    OL is a big prob

No, what they should do is trade it for a coup of first day slots. Gore and Barlow are fine for the 9ers. Alex Smith is a potential future QB, so you don't want Leinart.

The 9ers need speed on D, period. Their primary goal should be to draft a bunch of young, hungry, fast players to shore up their D. They have a few players, and aren't as far off as, say, Houston which needs linemen and speed.

Is it possible we're not talking about the same Forty-Niners? I'm talking about the team that posted a lower DVOA than any team in the history of the stat ('98 for the curious). They were far, far worse than Houston this year, and have more holes to fill. Houston has a servicable quarterback, a good running back, and and excellent wide reciever. The Niners have none of the above, and share Houston's problem of abysmal lines as well. The Niners need NFL-calibre players, period. Their goal should be to plug as many holes as possible, and to build from the lines up. Even if they manage to swing a Herschel Walker trade, they're years from contention right now.

The thing is, you win with premier playmakers. Trading down gets you a bunch of serviceable journeymen (unless you luck out and get a superstar later in the round, like the 49ers did with Rice). Bush is, according to the pundits anyway, the best playmaker at RB since Barry Sanders. He's someone you can build your entire offence around. Passing up someone that good for need will give you the same results as when Portland passed on Jordan to draft Sam Bowie. Not to mention, D's keying up on Bush would completely open up the field for Smith to throw into.

I'm not denying that the 49ers have an assload of holes, primarily at WR and OL, but you can't pass up a singular talent like Bush. Now, if the 49ers are 3rd or 4th, and no way they'll get Bush, I can see trading down some.

I am not so sure I agree with the 49ers not having a serviceable QB, Alex Smith has shown marked signs of improvement the last couple games, actually. Get him some time to throw, a RB opponents respect, and a target or 2 to throw to, and I think he'll be OK. Remember, next year we get our main TE, Eric Johnson back. Losing him was a huge blow, as he caught what, 80-90 passes the previous year, and is actually a pretty good receiving TE.

No, you don't win with premier playmakers. At least, you don't do it with stars alone. In football, everything starts with the line, on either offense or defense. Did you see what San Diego did to Indianapolis? All of Indy's stars were healthy, but their offensive line was banged up. The resultant pressure kept Indy's firepower muted. David Carr could tell us something about that. Davis is one of the better backs in the league, Andre Johnson is an outstanding playmaker, and Carr himself was once a highly touted prospect. Why hasn't the Texans' offense exploded? Turns out, it's tough to pass from your back.

Smith may one day be a decent quarterback. Ten picks and no touchdowns doesn't bode well for him though. I can guarantee that he'll never round into form if the Niner's don't invest in significantly better protection for him. Look at the most successful offenses in football... now look at their lines, perhaps via success rate for running backs, adjusted sack rate, and other such tools.

Be careful about touting Bush as a franchise savior. I, being old, recall when the same was said of Carter. You know, Ki-Jana Carter... the running back who was proclaimed to be a better prospect than Marshall Faulk. Remember the Ryan Leaf debacle? In hindsight, the decision to draft a guy named Peyton Manning instead is obvious, but at the time there was a tremendous amount of disagreement as to which would have the better career. Whether it's an inability to adapt or injuries, the only thing we can say about the sure thing in a draft is that it rarely is...

Er, Houston was considered the bottom of the barrel since day 1. San Fran WON day 1. They were in many games, and currently have a better record than Houston, against a harder strength of schedule.

Anyways, you are arguing the same point, just from a different angle.

San Fran traded their starting QB, or probably would've had a better year. They were playing some 5th string rodeo guy, Cody Pickett, and still were a better overall team than Houston was. Houston sucked ass and wasn't in almost any early game, unlike SF. Houston only started winning when other NFL teams started mailing in games.

David Carr is an experienced, decent QB but even he couldn't make Houston a better team than San Fran with Pickett starting. Houston has woeful O & DLs. San Fran does not. Thats the big difference and the reason it'll be easier for SF to get competitive.

San Fran has more talent in the trenches and a good, young coach and system. Houston does not have a new coach and most likely will bring in a new regime and change next year.

San Fran was 'in' quite a few games, and not nearly as far away from competing as Houston was.

Frank Gore and Barlow are both better runners with more upside than Dom Davis, in my opinion. As most franchises have proven, you can get very good WRs in day 2 of the draft. What San Fran needs, especially against the Seahawks and Rams is a good, fast D. Getting Reggie Bush would not massively upgrade their offense, and allow them to be competitive in a year or two, in my opinion. I have reservations of if he'll be the impact player people think he will.

Also, you can disrespect San Frans WRs all you want, but Arnaz Battle made one of the prettiest catches this year I've ever seen a WR make and is good. Lloyd is a decent WR, as well.

I certainly agree that San Fran has many holes, but they also had a first round QB pick, a new coach, a cap purge, and a lot of turnover so it's difficult to say how good they really are right now.

The big difference between Houston and San Fran, is Houston has played the same guys all year in the skill positions and gotten better, whereis San Fran seems to have gotten worse, and is now using the season to evaluate talent as they should given their woeful record.

San Fran is far from being a good team, but a lot closer than Houston.

Oh, and DVOA is a joke.

The current DVOA rankings have the Chefs ranked 4th and the Bengals ranked 6th.
Do you really believe KC and Cinci are top 6 teams? I don't, nor do most football knowledgeable people.

Stats only go so far in really showing things

If the Texans beat the Niners while the Packers, Saints, and Jets all lose then all 5 teams would be tie for last with 3-13 record. In that case the draft order would be New Orleans' opponents have an aggregate winning mark of just .507. Then, in order, comes Green Bay (.520), the Jets (.547), Houston (.556) and San Francisco (.573).

So the niners actually have a very slim chance at the first pick. The strength of schedule will of course changes after sunday's games. If this scenarios plays out, Bush might not be the first pick since the Saints has Deuce McAllister. Most likely they will get rid of Brooks and draft Leinhardt.

    Seatle at Green Bay
    Buffalo at Jets

The NFL needs to institute a lottery for all non playoff teams. This will prevent teams from tanking it late in the season to get a better pick.

OK, Green Bay and the Jets both won, putting them out of the Reggie Bush sweepstakes. New Orleans lost, which will give them first overall pick should Houston beat SF, I think.

So, if Houston beats SF, doesn't the draft order work out to:

    1) New Orleans
    2) San Francisco
    3) Houston

    or am I wrong?

Of course, if Houston loses, then the order is going to be

    1) Houston
    2) New Orleans

and after that I have no f'ing clue.

Anyway, if I'm right on the final order should Houston win (and they're leading 17-10 now in the 3rd), that would be right about perfect, I think. New Orleans already has a stud RB, and are in dire need of a QB worth a damn. So, if they're first, they're very likely gonna be picking Leinart. So, that would leave Bush there for the 49ers to snag at 2nd overall, meaning we get Bush and we don't have to pay 1st overall money for him. That would rule for true.
