Dodge Challenger

Looks like the American car companies are going retro again. From CNN:

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - With an appearance that draws heavily from the classic muscle cars of the late 1960s and early '70s, the Dodge Challenger, premiering in concept car form at next week's Detroit Auto Show, should satisfy those who thought the 4-door Dodge Charger just didn't have the right stuff.

This time around, the number of doors stays true to the original spirit. Just two.

"The people who were complaining about the Charger, if they complain about the Challenger there's something wrong with them," said David Zatz who runs the Web site Allpar.com, a site about Chrysler Group products.

The Dodge Charger was ripped by some because it was a four-door sedan, a nod to practicality seen as out-of-place in a car that carried the name of one of the most famous muscle car lines. As soon as images of the Charger were released to the public, letters of complaint started coming into DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group headquarters in Detroit.

In June 2005, a report in the industry newspaper Automotive News said that Chrysler was working on a two-door car, to be called the Challenger, based on the same engineering underpinnings, called the LX platform, as the Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300.

The Challenger concept is based, specifically, on the 1970 Dodge Challenger.

"During development of the concept car we brought an actual 1970 Challenger into the studio," exterior designer Michael Castiglione said in a company announcement. "For me, that car symbolizes the most passionate era of automotive design."

Designers wanted to evoke a mind's-eye image of the car without the visual imperfections required by manufacturing technology of the time, said Tom Trement, Chrysler Group's vice president for advanced vehicle design.

Look for coverage of the 2006 Detroit Auto Show starting Sunday, Jan. 8 at CNN.com.

Sad? Are you crazy? If they can still make cars like that affordably with decent gas mileage, American car makers wouldn't have anything to worry about. Make THAT car, price it at $15K and make it get 30MPG and they would sell a fuckton of them.

Isn't dodge owned by Mercedes now, so it's not exactly a US auto manufacturer any more? If so, can't exactly say that it's a US auto manufacturer gaining clue.

If American auto makers would build cars that weren't intentionally designed to fall apart at 100,000 miles they wouldn't be having their teeth kicked.

They've made their bed - fuck 'em.

LOL - Ford's stock is at 8 dollars a share... boohoo.

Yeah sorry, that just looks like a bastardized muscle car. It looks like a softened, pussified bloated piece of shit. I don't even like muscle cars, but I appreciate things in their design.

During development of the concept car we brought an actual 1970 Challenger into the studio,

Oh, no shit? An ACTUAL 1970 Challenger. You guys really outdid yourselves.

I got a better idea... Don't cheap out on the fucking thing... Make it 45k with 550 HP and get 8 miles to the gallon.

Actually that car looks pretty damn sweet and that says a lot considering how much I hate damn near every single modern american car.

      BUT

Mark my words... They'll half ass it and IF it ever comes out will be a shitheap until the aftermarket guys get a hold of it and unfuck all the shitosity worked into it by dodge.

You mean like the Prowler or the Viper? Or did you mean the Corvette? This shit doesn't work. The 2005 Mustang GT was about as good as it gets. $25k for 300hp.

and wasn't mustang at one point considered a pretty formidable muscle car? i bought my car used for $5k from 1991 and it almost has that many horsepower and it's a sedan lol

i agree with ralf, but make it more like $60k. cars that are unique and have mass appeal should not be mad mass-available, imo, because then it just makes the car gay, like what's already happened to mustangs. and camaros. and apparently chargers.

dunno though, i've never liked any muscle car and i don't really care for any of their designs, either, so i just kind of think it's hilarious that they're copying what they already built to get people to buy their shitty cars.

Yah if that charger comes out and is cheap every fucking white douchebag and redneck will be driving one thinking they are hot shit. Then they'll be labeled permagay.

i think the challenger above looks pretty slick, and will probably sell well if they keep it just like that.

yall are just a buncha haters, no jap company has anything they can go retro with... if they did, they would.
