"A Million Little Pieces"

Postby Kramer » Thu Dec 29, 2005 10:40 am

The book by James Frey, is a very good read, I haven't been able to put it down, the only book I went and bought with Christmas money.... very intense, very real, if you dig non-fiction it is pretty good shiz, written very stream-of-conscious but told very well....

I was in B&N yesterday and was debating on getting this for the plane trip. I picked it up a couple times, but ended up getting a huge crossword puzzle book instead. Now that I have heard some good reviews, I'll pick this up this weekend.

Just finished it.... it is a truly excellent book, particularly if you are an addict, are staying sober or are interested in getting in the mind of an addict.... I thought the end was good, the final page discussing the main characters was shocking though....

overall I would certainly recommend it to anyone, though if you offer it to someone who is older warn them that it gets very obscene at times

excellent read for the very slow after-christmas work week

I read this last Christmas, it's an excellent book and I love the way he writes, although the brief sentences make it a little tedious...but then again I have just started Chuck Klosterman's "Killing Yourself to Live" and his sentences are so long they make me want to throw the book. But it's still great.

Anyway...another recommendation for those of you enjoying James Frey...pick up Augusten Burrough's "Running With Scissors" then "Dry" and then he also has a collection of stories called "Magical Thinking" and finally a fiction novel "Sellevision."

hmmmmm.... that is interesting, a little long for me to read at the moment though....

One thing that is not as unusual as TSG is making it out to be is that fact that people in the story died or are in prison, etc.

having worked with and befriended serious addicts for the past 7 years, it is totally normal for people to kill themselves by drug or other ways

and being a mental health professional, it is totally normal to have to use totally false identities when referring to people in print so that they can't be traced... that is the whole point, to tell the story without the people being found

BUT I am interested and I will look into it, For me, the story, rather than the validity of the story was what was so powerful to me, it could have been a fiction piece and been just as powerful.... I have no desire to idolize some individual, though, if he lied that is really crappy

If it's so good then why was it rejected for publication when it was presented as fiction?

It sold because it was supposedly real.

wow. seems like the wheels are falling off.

I don't honestly know, having experienced some of what was discussed in the book it was very charged because of my own reliving of the story.... his story telling was powerful....

It would do some serious damage to his own professional life if he is proved to have "fleshed out" certain stories....

He even had a movie deal.... sucks for him.... This is the kind of stuff that is a nightmare because the allegations alone will make people distrust you.... true or not....

            I guess we'll see

Well the guys is laughing his way to the bank, I'd bet if oprah hadn't put it on her list the book would never have gotten the time in the limelite as it has.

I don't have facts but hasn't every book that oprah put on her list become a number 1 seller?
