we have cable internet, and my computer has the modem and a router and everyone else has wireless receivers for the router.

then yeah, it's probably your software.

every browser but IE uses W3C standards. since mozilla and opera and stuff are all W3C, things that work for IE won't always work for W3C. IE is by far the most popular browser and 95% of the webpages made are only tested against IE, not against programs that are W3C. in other words, IE will let a lot of sloppy coding slip by that W3C browsers won't. that results in links that don't always work and lots of weird display things like overlapping text, etc.

mozilla also will not work with sites that rely on ActiveX to run. that's basically the whole reason mozilla and opera are so much safer than IE, but you can't go to a lot of useful sites like the windows update site

so until the popularity of the programs goes up and people test their sites against W3C, those programs are always going to run the internet subpar compared to IE
