So yeah, no one went offside, and there was no procedure...

i think it was the ref's way of saying, "we realize we missed the guard jump, but we're not going to penalize the colts for jumping"

i dunno, kind of shitty, but probably actually the right move

I'll tell you what happened - none of the refs saw the false start. However, Pittsburgh incriminated themselves because they didn't snap the ball. False start is a deal ball foul and they expected the whistle to be blown. If they would have snapped it, they would have had a freeplay for offsides on the defense.

Pitt screwed up twice. That is what happened :p

There was contact by the defense, so if the refs didnt see that flinch by Faneca, then they should've called offside.

Contact by the defense is encroachment, not offsides.

I also believe that's the key difference here. The refs did not believe there was contact. (I didn't see any either) If Pittsburgh would have snapped the ball, it would have been offsides. No contact and no snap = no penalty though. The defense can hop into the neutral zone all day long if they want to. You will often see it when the defense is preparing to blitz, they will jump, and then jump back, because they mistimed the snap count. They are allowed to be in the neutral zone, *before* the snap.

Like you said it doesn't matter how many times they jump through the neutral zone as long as they don't touch the offensive player. And since the Steelers stood up thinking it was encroachment and the ball was never snapped it is then Offsides.

That entire game was an embarassment as far as officiating went, I hope they never get another game.
