Its fucking dog food, for the love of god, I know people who have had to eat it before to survive and they straight out said, it could have been a lot fucking worse. Its not like there is anything in eat we don't normally eat, its just not high quality. If I was starving I would take a block of smooshy corn biscuit anyday. Its not like they said "Hey, we can send you a shipment of our poop for you to sustain life on".

How do you think it'd go over if it was suggested by another country that we take care of the hunger problem in America by feeding people steamed cockroaches? People who are starving (ie: not just hungry, but DYING because they have not had food for days and their bodies are literally consuming themselves from the inside slowly and painfully) will resort to eating bugs, spoiled food, gross stuff that would normally be discarded, and even human flesh. I once read that there was a slave revolt in Massachusetts back in either the late 1600s or early 1700s, that arose out of a protest that they were being forced (yes, forced) to eat Lobster for 2 meals out of 3 every day.

Going back to the original topic, I think it is rather silly that they'd refuse food, from ANY source. Indeed, I bet if they'd never heard that it was intended to be dog food, and it had just been presented to them as low-grade corn biscuits, they'd have been all for it. However, when you run up against major cultural taboos, rationality goes right out the window. It sounds entirely plausible that offering these people anything dog-related is indeed quite akin to offering a completely devout hindu a plate of prime rib, or a devout orthodox jew a big plate of ham or crab.
