Question about stinky smokers.

Postby Zanchief » Thu Feb 09, 2006 8:28 am

I'm thinking of putting in an offer for a house, the only downside is the people who lived there before were smokers and there's still the vile stink of tobacco everywhere.

Question is, how hard is it to get that smell out and how would I go about doing it?

PS: Smokers suck.

You could hire those flood/fire recovery folks to see what they can do. I forget their names but their commercials are all over the place.

P.S.: Smokers that smoke in the house suck. (I smoke outside)

Carpets are easy enough, have them cleaned, walls and ceilings, well the best thing I have found to use is a solution of Oxyclean and hot water. My roommates smoke, so there are tar marks all over the ceilings and walls.

Alos, let the house air out in the summer, don't keep it all cooped up.

The house is clean and well maintained. The walls look fine and all, it's just I can tell people smoked in the house before.

It's in the carpets then. A good carpet cleaning followed up by Febreze should work.

Air it out for five days and I highly doubt you'll still smell anything. I smoke in my apartment, and a few days before my parents come to visit I air out the place simply because I know they dislike the smell of smoke. I've asked them several times if they can smell it, and they can't.

I'd put in a complete masterclean type of deal into the contract.

If they've been smoking there for years, it's embedded into the walls, carpet, etc and will be tough to get rid of.

/agree Smokers suck. I hate driving in their cars and their houses stink, even if they don't smoke in them.

You have to repaint the walls and at a minimum get the carpets professionally cleaned. Even then you need to go to your local home store and buy some smoke away spray stuff and spray it into the ventilation system so it circulates thought out the house. It will take a few weeks of this to get the smell completely gone.

There is also some ozone machine you can rent (I dunno where but you can rent one) after you clean/paint you can leave it in the house for 3 or 4 days and turn it on. (You cant be in house while its on). Come back and whamo smell free house.

But yeah for sure put some kind of "you're a stinky ass" clause in your contract.

Get an Ionizer, they wont get rid of all the smell but they do a hell of a job.

all of the above, i think. it takes time and effort to get rid of smoky smells... ask my car after i quit smoking. it took a good cleaning, lots of air fresheners/febreze sprays, and a few months of the usual circulation of air to get it all the way out. it sucked. :(

at the house we rented last, we had a fireplace and my roommates thought that it was awesome because they would sit next to the fireplace and smoke (they had previously smoked only outside) and blow the smoke into the fireplace in the hopes it would go up the chimney. it worked when there was a fire burning but not otherwise. the living room started to smell smoky after awhile so i put my foot down and told them to go outside. it took carpet cleaning and febreze to completely rid the living room of the smell.

don't smoke, kids.

Pour milk all over your carpets and the smoke smell will go away.

Ok do this... Pay good money to have the carpets cleaned really well.. The difference between a cheap cleaning and a good cleaning is night and day.

Also pay someone to come in and scrub the walls and surfaces with soap.

That should get all the tar out.

If that doesn't work light part of the house on fire. The smell of burnt house will overpower the cigarette smoke.

I can put a cigarette out and 20 minutes later a non-smoker can walk in and never smell it. That air system in that house sucks.

You could store corpses in your house without a smell problem-you have a better ventilation system than anything NASA has if I remember correctly.

Clean carpets, walls, and vents. Deodorize them and then you will be fine.

When my grandpa died, the walls were so caked with tar that there were white boxes behind the pictures.

That is probably true, when I stained the wood work in my basement, the lacquer smell was gone within 10 hours :)
