So I have decided to give it another go, what little I have played has been interesting. Reading through some of the class spells/abilities has been interesting but I assume rarely tells the story of a class.
What are the group rolls in EQ2 and what classes seem to fit in those roles? EQ1 had the standard Tank, Healer, Slower, CC, DPS. Does EQ2 break down in a similar way or is it completely different. Its really hard to tell from the first few levels of course.

EQ2 Classes
For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.

mostly yes. however the shamn druid and cleric classes all have decent heals and if a cleric cant be had any of these fit the roll.
Conjureror and Necro are the same functionality as they were in eq1 imho. mezzes are your illusionists and coercers.
tanks are a little different gian since all of them can be interchanged however, some tanks are better in certain situations then others.
Paladins are loved in just about any group (something eq1 still has problems with)
Your rogue classes are interchangeable the exception of the bard class, bards give alot to a group in the way of chants, mana regen, etc etc. what dps they lose from not be a full rogue class they make up for in verstility, debuffs and all out coolnees. They can take the place of a rogue class or ranger class but can be replaced by one of the other classes. there have been alot of times where I have seen a make up like the following:
Main Healer Mystic
Nuker Warloc/wizard
Primary Tank Paladin
Seocndary Tank Beserker
Melee Debuff bard
Melee DPS Swashbuckler

He has to say nice things about the Troub....he's married to one.
Seriously, that's a pretty accurate description. Classes are more flexible that EQ1. You can trade out different classes and still be pretty much equal.

Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.
All of the classes in EQ2 are quite balanced. The only classes that are slightly underpowered are shadowknights and inquisitors. They are still good classes though.
The big thing you have to ask yourself is how much you want to solo exp. For soloing as a tank don't be a guardian. For healers don't be a cleric. For the others I have no clue. The only reason you might want to avoid being a guardian or cleric for soloing is simply because these classes kill very slowly.

Does race screw you if you want to do, say, a kerran enchanter? I love playing as kerrans but I don't want to have some handicapped character later on in the game because of that technicality.

Not that I've noticed. There are racial traits that are skewed one way or another but I really haven't noticed it making much of a difference.

It's similar to EQ that different races have higher attributes in certain areas. You might get a few extra points of wisdom, strength, etc.. in the area you want to for your class. It's very easy to hit the cap though.
So yah.... It doesn't really matter that much. If you're going to be a healer or mage character I would strongly recommend putting a shitload of points into stamina to increase your hit points. It's so easy to hit the cap for wisdom or intelligence as it is.
