I found out I was pregnant on SuperBowl Sunday (yeehaw :ugh: ) and have reeeeeally been slacking on stopping. I decided that I will start today...but this is my third time to say such this week alone. Wish me luck.

you going Cold Turkey or are you going to try something like the patch or the gum or something. A guy I work w/ just quit using Hipnosis, I though it was a crock of shit, but he was a smoker for 12+ years and it really did work for him. Went to like 3 sessions hasn't picked up a cig in months. Doesn't even crave it. Cost him about $150-200 or so I can't remeber how much he said it cost him, said it was well worth it though. Good luck.

I wouldn't suggest patches or gum if you're pregnant. I mean, regardless of what a doctor might tell you, I have a hard time believing nicotine in the system can be good in that situation.

That is so awesome though...hope you post the first ultrasound =)

grats on the new kiddo Darc - I quit cold turkey when I quit, and it was the easiest way to do it for me; I tried quitting slowly, but kept using the same excuses people use on diets - oh one more won't matter, it's just one right, I'll smoke less tomorrow for sure, etc.

Talk to your doctor about the best way to quit, cold turkey is not good for the baby after a certain stage. Im sure the patch is worse. GOod Luck to you

Kiz is right in that you should absolutely inform your doctor that you want to quit smoking. It is very important that the doc knows this so they can help monitor you and the baby accordingly.

However. as a note, quitting smoking, regardless of the stage of pregnancy, is ALWAYS better than the alternative, cold turkey or otherwise. There are no harmful side effects to the kid, and it is recommended that you quit as SOON as possible always. Even at between 14-30 weeks, once you quit, the baby is getting more oxygen needed to grow properly.

Patches, gum, lozenges all = big no-no throughout all stages of pregnancy. Straight doses of nicotine are VERY bad for the baby.

On the upside, you have a really good reason to snack frequently ;)

Congratulations and good luck Darc. Quit for good this time.
Everytime you want a cig, just remind yourself that you will have to start ALL OVER AGAIN if you give in and have one.

Right now I am just trying to phase it out. Not working.

First time I quit, I quit in a day and didnt care. Was the day I met Gidan. But months after the baby was born, I still wasnt sleeping so I picked it back up.

Now I cant stop.

I've quit a few times and every time I did I did it cold turkey. I always manage to go at least a few days before I get the "omg I have to have one I can't help it" feeling...then I smoke one cig...best to do it with a brand you don't like (if there is one) and by that point it would taste nasty and I wouldn't do it again. Just force yourself to keep busy, do other things, chew regular gum, and once you smoke the last one of the pack you are on, tell yourself that's it, and that you're done. And when I can't sleep I put on a movie I've seen a ton of times and bore myself to sleep...oddly it works, and I used to have pretty bad insomnia.

Quit for your kid(s).

And don't start smoking again, regardless of your excuses. Given the rate of SIDS, sickess, etc, there should easily be enough incentive to get sleeping pills or whatever and not pick it up.

Was considering not posting this but will anyways. I smoked in the first few months of my last pregnancy, probably a month give or take after I found out. I was pregnant with twins. Somewhere midterm my amniotic sac started to leak with my son. I was put in the hospital on bedrest where after a few weeks he passed away and my daughter was born 13 weeks early. Even though I quit, I still blame smoking on what happened. It's proven smoking causes premature rupture of the membranes and premature birth. Just stop now. Do it cold turkey and stop. The guilt I have every day of my life and always will have is more excurciating then a few days of the shakes ever were. Good luck to you.

Don't try hypnosis for quitting. My mother did that and she pretty much lost her short term memory because of it. Plus she still smokes =P

I found that deciding you are not going to be selfish anymore and choose something, like a kid, over what you want, helps tremendously..... that and finding some friends to support you and giving them the authority to get on your ass if you start smoking again...

it is serious stuff.

aside from all of that congrats on your little one...

Well my only other girl friend is now pregnant, so maybe she will stop and all temptation to start again will be gone.

I think I quit yesterday. This whole day long "morning" sickness really helped kick it quick.

Or you could be strong and not have to rely on someone else to support you in doing something you know is fucking stupid and worthless to begin with. Either keep being an idiot and poisoning your child or don't, it's not a hard choice.

yeah I'm sorry if I'm mean but nothing pisses me off more than people who hurt other people without them being able to do a damn thing about it. You're bringing this child into the world, the LEAST you can do is make sure they start out on an even playing field.

Which is why I was trying to quit in the first place. Jerkhead. If I didnt give a fuck about him/her, I would just keep on my merry way, smoking.

And maybe YOU can quit something without support from others, but *I* can not.
