Walmart's cure for strep throat.

Postby Sorina S » Mon Feb 27, 2006 4:03 pm

The other day Lee was talkin bout somehow that his company just can't shoulder the burden of it's employees health care costs. You know he came up with a good plan, lets have these Govenors help foot the bill. Hell man Walmart is the largest employer in these United States and makes more money than the baby Jesus on a good day. Even Andy Young is on this gravy train.

http://www.usatoday.com/money/industrie ... -ceo_x.htm

I'm all over this shit, I'd be more than happy to pay more in state taxes to make sure that those Walmart cashiers can get their strep throat taken care of http://today.reuters.com/investing/Fina ... ALMART.xml

I just couldn't abide payin $1.99 for a $1.49 pair of socks. If there's two things in this world I hate to see it's fairly priced, substandard, made in a sweat shop, Chinese products and cashiers with strep throat. Hell I'm a rich American I light up my GPC generic cigs with $50 dollar bills I can surely afford to bail out Walmart's heath care plan.

You know I get a little teste when assholes like this guy have the elephant balls to think 'We the People' have brains the size of lima beans. I'd hate to point any fingers at where this type of behavoiur comes from /cough Cheney/cough Haliburton...but I'll tell you true, I can't wait til this administration ends. Oh another link...

If I was Wal-Mart I would close every store, laying off over a million workers and give America a big "Fuck You".

Then I would go swim in my billions like Scrooge McDuck.

No Tikker the problem is that millions of skilled industrial workers who's jobs have been shipped overseas are now working at Walmart, and Home Depot and Best Buy and several dozen other odd retailers who couldn't give a shit about the American way of life.

Do you have an idea of how big Walmart is? If not watch this

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline ... mart/view/

These guys are freakin huge, like Exxon/Mobil huge...and they wanna poor mouth about providing heathcare for their employees? Dude, you're not facing the change in the American work environment. More people work for Walmart in the US than any other company. Do you get that? Or are you Canadian?

Fish, my man. The unemployment claims alone would send this country into bankruptcy. But I kinda like the thought of swimmin in that pool of money, wish I had a pool of money.

That explains a lot.

Tikker is right. Working at Wal-mart as a 'career' is not a well thought out plan for a bright future. No company has to offer insurance or any other sort of benefits. They offer bennies to attract better qualified people. The idea of Wal-mart trying to attract better people is laughable. They've made their money by selling disposable products run in stores full of disposable people.

Yea but that's easy for you to say Tik, and yeah I knew you were Canadian, not that there's anything wrong with that. I've been all over up and down Canada, no worries I really like it there. Your healthcare system leaves something to be desired, but at least you have one. If you think us Americans are wipin our asses with $100 bills, well think again. And if you think working for Walmart is like working for MacDonalds, think again.

We've outsourced our industrial base to the max, hell man do you make Chevys up there? Wonder what GM pays in taxes to Canada vs healthcare costs in the US. You're Canadian, not that there's anything wrong with that, but you'll never see my point.

Martrae, noone aspires to work at Walmart. But more Americans end up there than any other place. You don't get that do you? I bet you went to Brandies, I knew a girl from Brandies 23 years ago, she was as ignorant then as you are now, have a good day.

WTF is Brandies?

If you've settled into Wal-mart and are expecting a job like that to provide bennies then that's what you are currently aspiring to. You are looking for a dead end job to magically change for you to not be dead end. It isn't going to happen.

Working for Wal-Mart IS like working for McDonald's though.
Neither require an education, neither give benefits and both have a huge turn-over rate.

Martrae, not everyone who works for Walmart is a checkout girl. Walmart has one of the largest logistical enterprises in the world (thats trucks, ships and warehouses to you and me). And them guys don't get dick for bennies.

Walmart has one of the most sophisticated inventory and ordering systems on the face of the planet, they invented it. You think those folks are livin large, think again. Walmart is huge, I said that in my first post and I meant it.

Your problem is that you, like Walmart, don't grasp the fact that for alot of folk. Well, that is their career. I don't know what planet you live on but down here on earth, you do what you gotta do to survive. If that means workin at Walmart, ces't la vie.

btw Brandies is a nice college in Mass, Hillary went there.

You guys all missed the big questions here. Does Walmart employees get discount on merchandise? And if they do, how big is the discount?

Walmart employees get a 10% discount on non food items.

To be any kind of trucker, I would have to get a license. And what does that have to do with the arguement?

The answer to that is no, unless it's five finger.

Your argument Darc was that any un educated, unskilled slob could get a job at Walmart. Wasn't? Go apply for a job drivin truck for Walmart, lemme know what they require.

Wal-Mart employees get 10% discount on merchandise unless it is food or clearance items. It's kind of funny, though. If the food is unhealthy, you get a discount. (Potato chips, coke, etc.)

As far as Wal-Mart for a career, you guys are only partly right. If you expect to remain an hourly as a career, then yes, you fucked up. If you become a store manager, the cash flows in like a busted fire hydrant.

The new store manager in Anniston, AL raked in around $65k a year and got two $50k bonuses in that same year. The bonuses are not hard to get (hard to find a Wal-Mart not making a profit) and the bonus structure for store managers is 5% of that stores total profit in one year. It is usually big enough to have to break up into two checks because they're greedy motherfuckers and want to earn interest on the other half for 6 months. (Co-Managers get 3% and Assistant managers get 1%)

It might not sound like a lot of money to some of you but you have to keep in mind that the salary that guy made was before (before!!) it became a supercenter, so the profit will be substantially higher now that it's a supercenter, but also do not overlook the fact that the cost of living in this area is a joke.

In higher cost of living areas the pay is even higher. 165k a year in bumblefuck Alabama is sweet fucking cash. I'll walk around a corny-ass store with a corny-ass name badge and do a corny gay dance for that kind of green anyday.

The downside? You have no time to spend it.

Wal-Mart is getting better about paying their hourlys thanks to union pressures but they will always stand behind their little motto that works whenever someone whines about their treatment. "We're trying to make you strive for excellence. If you don't like your wages, excel and get promoted to our kind of green."

Just don't expect to have any time to spend it while you're working for them 85 hours a week...heh

The problem is people that normally work there do not have the drive to become store management. It's a temp job that they work at forever.

Is Wal-Mart to blame for this, though? Should Wal-Mart be forced to provide them with high wages and wonderful benefits for being undereducated underachievers?

I don't think so. They're lucky that Wal-Mart even gave them a job.

Well Martrae, do you think high turnover rate isn't directly related to company benefits? I've driven truck for 9 years now. 5 years with a company I like cus they treat me well and pay 80% of my benefits.

Here's a clue, everything you buy, everything you eat, everything that surrounds you in your existence was once on a truck. Somebody drove that truck, can you drive a truck, would you even want to? And don't even get me started on those warehouse lumpers.

You a funny person Martrae, self centered as the day is long. You must have great bennies or daddys credit card.

Fish your not getting it. In many cases Walmart took away the good job they had. Walmart is the corporate model for outsourcing. They are the reason there are fewer and fewer industrial jobs in this country every year.

No one is 'lucky' when they they take a job at Walmart, the word inevitable comes to mind...

You could try to tell them to buy American and then be forced to pay more for their products. There's just one problem with that great idea. America doesn't agree with you. America is quite happy paying less for disposable Chinese garbage. And as long as there's a profit in it, you'd be a fucking fool not to capitalize on it.

Welcome to America.

arrggh, you new guys need to read the original post. This isn't about what Walmart pays or who it hires it's about whether it will provide sufficient healthcare options to it's employees. And yea, I worked at Marshal's in the early 80's when I was in college, so fuckin what? I also worked at the Fernald State school and got 100% healthcare bennies, I only made 5 bux an hour then but I had health insurance.
