Anyone know much about bicycles?

I'm planning on riding a bike to work during the spring and summer when it's nice since I don't live far away. So I'm looking for a few suggestions for what to buy but want to stay in the $200-300 range. i figured anyone who would know much about them would go to the Sports section. Plan on using it mostly on road/sidewalk and occasionally offroad. Thanks~

EDIT: There's 1 large hill (about a half mile long) that I can bypass to get home but would like to go that route if it's an option with the type of bike. I want to be able to get a little workout without it being too much of a pain. I don't want to be going into work all sweaty. Another thing, I'm 6 foot 6 and 250 pounds if that makes choosing one any different.

pretty much any 18-21 speed bike will do what you want

mountain bike style would probably work best with your frame

unless of course you wanna go extreme bmx coolguy bike and do flips off the hill

Any specific suggestions? All I remember was being 10 years old and thinking my Huffy 12 speed was hot shit. Now i see 21 speeds are common? Any specific suggestions to models of bikes would rock. Trek/Giant/Schwinn? What brands do I get or doesn't it matter?

if it's just for riding back and forth to work, and that's really about it, just go for the one that feels the most comfortable when you sit on it~

2 years ago now, I picked up new bike and went all out on the shocks etc etc

I hate it~

I find that having the shocks on it actually absorbs a lot of the pedalling power =\

it's pretty hard to go wrong with schwinn, but really, pretty much any old 18-21 speed bike will work for transportation. you're probably never going to use more than 6-7 of the gears anyways

DO NOT go for Dual suspension, you will get a cheap, heavy ass bike, a good dual suspension bike costs far more than $300

K2 makes a nice bike, but prolly a bit out of your price range. Just go to a local bike store and look around.

And Yes, dont go full suspension (front and back) they suck on roads

taxx look at giant bikes. they make pretyt much every frame in america ( the great trek included ) You can get the same bike for less their road bikes are great but I would probaly go mnt if I was you.

yeah, definitely go towards mountain if you are deciding between mountian or 10 speed, a mountain bike wil take INFINITELY more damage than a 10 speed, much higher AC np
