Second Tier stuff generally plays everything good, for 1/10th the price of upgrading to cutting edge.

I think the difference is Tik is talking about building an entirely new rig, and Harri is moreso discussing upgrading components.

It'd be pretty easy to spend $1k every 2.5 years on new top of the line stuff

ps, round my $1k cdn down to ike 800ish american

Yup, my 6600GT 256 is enough to run everything out there.

Cheaper and plenty of performance, no need to spend $500 on dual 7800GTX's

Decent second teir Vid Card is 150.
If you want to get a new mobo and cpu, you can do that for another few bills.

Thats a decent upgrade in and of itself and nowhere near 800.

For close to a grand I can build a new rig.

there is a difference between being able to run stuff, and being able to run stuff with everything turned on

(don't get me wrong, I tend to buy 2nd tier shit myself)

I've upgraded my PC every 2-3 years for the last 15+ years. New mobo and CPU one year for $350, new hard drive and vid card the next year for $350, ram, uptical drive, power supply + whatever the next year for $300 etc and that's not buying the best of the best. Upgrade prices have stayed stayed pretty consistent for many years.

Spending $300 a year on your PC is easy.

I spent $300 on my Xbox 5 years ago and another $80 putting a new hard drive in it last year. That's not a bad investment for 5 solid years of gaming.

Consoles are by far the best bang for the buck.

unless you want multiplayer with more than 2-4 ppl. while some games offer more than that online(or if you hook multiple systems up together), it still doesn't approach the 64 player games in terms of stability and availibility on a PC. let alone an MMO, even though those are starting to come to consoles it looks like.

but the library of games on a PC is umpteen million times larger than any single console, and they support interfaces that are light years beyond a controller in terms of functionality.

the day that people playing games on consoles can browse and join PC hosted games and vice versa, is the day i'll play. but right now, console online multiplayer seems to be where PC internet multiplay was 10 years ago :dunno:

I can't wait for the day when console people think they can join a FPS match and compete using their wireless joysticks from the comfort of their couch~

My custom made Cyberpower pc I just bought in January will last me another 4-5 years and runs everything out now basically flawless. Was only $1000. So what I'm saying is yes I agree for a couple hundred bucks you can get something very passable.

The 9800pro I bought in 2003 ran FEAR and Quake IV just fine. I certainly didn't have all the eye candy, but I had a great SP and MP experience nonetheless.

Even when I go and play these shitty games on THEIR turf (I.E. on the console with a controller) I still shit on those noobs consistently.

Give me 20 minutes to get the hang of the shitty accuracy, and it's over.
