How do you

Postby Diekan » Tue Mar 21, 2006 1:30 pm

tell an 18 year old not to waste 4 years of his life on the stupid Army?

I'm trying to tell the fool kid to get his ass in college and not to waste his life in go-now-where "job" like the Army that will do nothing for him, but break his body down and delay his earning of a degree.

Before you Navy and Air Force people get in on this - remember I'm not talking about those branches (that DO offer a lot of benefits for life after) - I'm talking about the damn Army...

Just because is was a waste of your life doesn't mean it will be a waste of his. Good advice isn't telling him to not go to the army and go to college. Good advice is telling him to weigh his options and do what's best for him be it the army or otherwise.

Tell him to use the Army to pay for his college so he doesn't waste the next 10 years paying off the last 4 once he graduates.

Is he completely set on solely the Army versus Navy or Air Force?

At a minimum, maybe talk him into the reserves?

if he plays his cards right there are enough college programs he can take while in. If he wants to still join up there is always OCS. Yeah he will lose his soul but his college will be paid for.

In all honesty going to four years of straight college is a dumb decision IMO.

The best thing you can do is have him get a job somewhat related to what he might wants to do and go to school part time while you get experience. The military isn't a bad way to do this. The only thing about that is you will have to bust your ASS to handle the military committment and go to school at the same time.

If he is going to join the service pick a decent career field too that will actually have some real world application, like SNIPER

Go to community college. The same credits go to a four year degree and cost about 1/4 as much. Not to mention both the classes and the girls are easier.

Tell him to join the marines. He will get tons of poon and actual RL experience. I want to jump any Marine I see. I think I show tremendous restraint when I dont, I am proud of myself.

Comm college aka Junior College. Most college students go this route for 2 years before they move on to a university.

There's nothing like that around here. There's Technical Colleges, where you can get 1 year certificates, 2 year certificates, or 2 year Associates Degrees, and they're generally what was considered "vocational" school back in the day. Mostly tech/industry/medical stuff. Other than those there's 4 year schools.

technical colleges here = community colleges back home - same difference, really.

round these parts theres a huge difference between tech school and community college. you take university type classes, english 101, poli sci that kinda shit... and get an associates or some people go the route to get credits towards the "real college" you hope to attend.

tech school you learn a trade skill.

our community college offers all those things. :dunno:

i have friends who have taken their gen-ed stuff (english, poli-sci) and then transferred to hastings college; i have friends who've earned associate's degrees there; i also have friends who've gone through specialized programs like automotive or tool & die or whatever else.

Yep - same around here. You can get your associates, or you can get a trade diploma type of thing - they offer transferrable credits in either program, which offers a fairly cheap alternative for those who are going to want to go for their bachelors but don't want to do the whole university four year thing.
