I made one post when I got my new car and I think I said I'm doing ok despite going through public school, otherwise I don't see where I've done anything on the board stating that I'm otherwise financially well off or anything like that. I'm not worried where my next meal is coming from, but I'm not Larry Ellison either. Mostly I post stupid one liners and make fun of people. I guess if that suggests financial status then yay go money.

There's an old guy who just bought a Presidential and wants to sell me his 2 tone oyster with the blue face for 1500. Considering the guy had it for 2 years and kept it in mint I 've been thinking about it since I'd never have to buy another watch again. That and I'm single, no kids, no gf. Why not?

I think I was referring to a post you made about all the gadgets you buy (maybe I'm remembering someone else). At one point you mentioned how you like to have the latest technology, and something similar about being able to b/c you've got the money, no gf, no kids, etc. Basically similar to your last line but also mentioning that you were doing well. Also, didn't you post about being a Consultant who was traveling to Hong Kong on business once too?

BTW, I see posting about a Rolex as being along the same lines. "hey guys, should I buy a Rolex" says to me "hey, I've got more money than I know what to do with! Should I do something silly with it??"

Anyway, I'm making a bigger deal about this than it is, so I'm going to slink back into my lurker status...

Like I said, I'm not starving but I'm not cruising a yacht either. I just like spending on stuff that'll last me a long time. I have no qualms shelling out for a watch if it lasts me 20 years, looks nice, and turns a head here and there. I just wanted to know if these were worth it or if they're overhyped cash holes like Nike's, Escalades, Prada clothing, Mercedes' cars etc etc. I've never owned a Rolex, but I've heard 2 sides worth of opinions. I've heard they suck as a watch and that Omega's are better, and I've heard that they last fuckin forever too. And longevity is cool and all, but not 5k cool. I'm only considering this due to the 1.5k price tag.

I have a couple of friends who, when they graduated from college and started making money, completely changed their lifestyle. So much so, that one of them recently proclaimed that one "couldn't live in NYC for under $500,000". I drilled into it a bit, and he has a beautiful 2-bedroom apartment complete with piano, elliptical trainer, etc. He of course also has a BMW, and he and his wife like to wear expensive clothing.

One has to remember that in professions that pay well, it's quite easy for that money to stop, and earlier than one might think. Live well, but not excessively, and you'll be happier in the long run.

At any rate, now I'm just rambling and not talking about you in particular. Now I'll really go back to lurking

I see where you're coming from and I've stopped myself a few times from making bad decisions based on that same mindset. Just like the whole thing about lottery winners and how they aren't rich forever, the money itself loses value if it's not managed properly. If you take that in reverse, the little amount of money that one has can be worth much more with the same management skills too. At 1.5k for a Rolex, I'd buy that with the waiter's wages that I was making during college if I knew it would last me a while.

As I said earlier, my dad's watch has lasted almost 40 years now, with only needing major repair once, ever. Had to get the clasp repaired once too, that's it. My mom's rolex has been a bit more delicate, but then again, women's watches are more delicately built than men's. Still, given the 40 year time span, the frequency of trouble vs time span has been miniscule.

As far as accuracy, etc. both have been quite accurate as far as I know, and in my experiences using my dad's watch the few times he's loaned it to me. If you're looking for a watch that'll last you forever, and that you can hand down to your kids, you can't go wrong with a Rolex. There are other watches out there that are also very very good, don't get me wrong, but I don't think you'd regret getting the watch for that price.

Depending on what you do, its a good way to alienate yourself from clients or piss off your boss.

Nothing screams asshole like a garish hunk of metal you wear around your wrist. Same thing goes for cars... buy a newer model, but never brand new.

Just watch what who wears what where and you'll understand some more.

This is really very true. There's an entire hierarchy of appropriate attire out there. Also, if you're a consultant as I am, add to the equation that you don't generally want to be audacious in front of clients (investment bankers get away with it; consultants usually can't).
