What caught my attention was the internet poker reference. I play a lot of internet poker, I even make a reasonable income doing so.

I know it's illegal, but I also think it's harmless. I don't live in Oklahoma, but if a bill like this was passed in Colorado I would have to go apeshit.

problem is how do they know it was pirated?

I make copies of all my movies and lock up the masters...I make copies of all my games and lock up the masts as well. If there is a NOCD check I crack ahead of time. So if they start scanning my shit will I goto jail or have some computer cop show up on my fucking doorstep with a warrant to search? All because I have what would be considered 'Pirated' software on my computer?

hell last time I had the cops in my house it was because I beat the crap out of some dick down the road that was smacking his wife around in the front yard.

Al I am saying Lyion is personally I do have a problem here. Microsoft cannot discern from what is legal and what is not. Lets look at excel that is put on by say....ummm DELL. Dell uses a mirror install image if MSOffice is intalled on the puter at the time of ship. Mind you I have seen 6 systems all come from the same office that have the same OEM coded into the registry as well as MSOffice's OEM. Will these people be subject to investigation? Obviously they are pirating (under thier guidelines) because according to the EULA from Microsoft the Liscense can only be on one machine at a time.

You dont think if Microsoft adds a backdoor into the system so they can fix those 'nasty pirate' problems that it wont be exploited? I give it 10 minutes after release and some hacker in Norway will have found 6 flaws into the system.

Case in point for piracy protection gone too far? Stardock. They have proven that stardock can and will damage a CDROM over time. Nice huh? But they say "Well noone has brought it to us in Russia so we can look at the computer."

if you have the masters, what does it matter?

It's the same reason people keep receipts for tax time

You may get audit'd
if you have the legit copies, no issues

In general, I like to think that the government is NOT trying to screw the average joe

don't get me wrong, I don't think that they should have free reign to scan an entire HDD for whatever, but I don't think it's an issue to have a company check the legitimacy of their software

but where does it stop Tik? At what point do you draw the line? Is it ok for them to monitor your TV Watching behaviour? how about if the make it mandatory to place trackers in your car? How about under your skin? Perhaps we can do National ID cards. Mandatory DNA sampling, Mandatory registration for guns.

It might sound paranoid but dude you have to think about it for a sec...if you let one bill slide the next one that is for "Our Own Good" goes thru even faster.

And do I want some cheese dick son of a bitch knocking on my fucking door at 5am asking to see my masters of all my games? Jesus...you know How long that would fucking take? I have 12 disk folders each sotring 100 games.

PS: everything you do is monitored. TV has been monitored since it started to be broadcast... how do you think they get viewer statistics for shows? You think they take a poll or osmething? lol

Every transaction you've ever made, every flight you've been on, every site you've visited on your computer, everything. Someone has access to every aspect of your life already. This is no big surprise to me. You just have to be smart and not do anything to make them need to pull your information up. They're not going to randomly do a crapshoot and pick people to monitor.

And like Tikker said, only the people doing illegal shit have anything to worry about.

If software has anything in it that gathers such information, it WILL be exploited.

By the company issuing the software, AND/OR by malicious hackers...
