Wrong.

If software has anything in it that gathers such information, it WILL be exploited.

By the company issuing the software, AND/OR by malicious hackers...

Microsoft has no fucking right to search through my hard drive, for ANY reason.

No it won't. You're just paranoid and anti-microsoft.

No, I haven't. But I also think if you don't think television companies can see who is watching what at any given time, you're just in denial.

Nielsen ratings are based on how many households are watching a particular program. You have to have their special cable box connected to your tv in order for them to determine what you are watching. People volunteer to get this box because it makes them feel important. They are part of a random sample population. Nielsen takes this segment of the population and then through statistical analysis they determine that "x-amount of households across the country watched <insert program here>." Most of these boxes are in the southern California area. Anyway, that's how Nielsen works. You need this special transmitting box attached to your tv. My parents friends down in Irvine have one.

Some places don't even use the boxes. You have a form you fill out and send in.

That must be a relatively new procedure.

Nah, my aunt and uncle did that several years ago. It probably has to do with how close you are to an actual Nielsen office.

Ever heard of Nielsen, Drem? Gallup polls?

put in place so that you don't question how they get their statistics ;)

mostly kidding. they were used in the pre-digital age for over the air transmission

now with cable and IPTV, it's super simply to track every single channel change

Tikker you live in Canada. Here they are proposing laws so they can track stuff like that for advertising.

see, and that kind of sounds like a good thing

if I start getting hit with ads for Hockey, Computer stuff, camping, etc etc instead of the random viagra/penis pump/whatever ads I see now it seems like a positive tradeoff

I actually have very little problem with targeted marketing

not to get off topic but how many of us actually watch the ads? The only time I watch them is if they get a good laugh out of me. Most times I hit the Fast Forward on my DVR.

chances are, on 27358027598275 of them, Simpsons, or Law and Order is on

This has nothing to do with TV. Or advertising...

This has to do with opening the door for more bullshit laws that will protect companies from gathering way too much personal information about people.

It may be different up there Comrade, but I don't want fucking BUSINESSES snooping through my hard drive and able to know every single thing about me.

Looking through what I have, I dont see anything that would tell someone who I am or give a good impression on what I like or like doing.

I honestly dont see the big issue. But maybe it's just me. :dunno:

HACKERS will exploit the SOFTWARE's ability to scan your hard drive.

What is so difficult to understand about this?

lets say you keep data on your computer for your business? whats to stop them on one of their routine sweeps from downloading it?

Security rule number 1: If you think it has security floaws. then it probably does.

How about you run a business from home tik? Whats the difference between me jimmying your door to look for illegal smut and such, and Jimmying your computer to check for pirated software. I might not find either but both are stillan invasion of privacy.

Look all I am saying is the first chance someone gets they wil exploit the fuck out of this. If you dont think a hacker wont find a way to use this your sorely mistaken.

What about government computers? From what I am reading in Wired they will be able to bypass most firewalls because it appears to be a 'authorized patch' from microsoft. Do you actually trust them not to look at any thing that says Top Secret? Most of these dinks dont even live in our country. I just dont feel comfortable having some Malaysian named "Stan' diggin around in there. Hell I dont even trust them fucking with my shit.
