They'll know more than that if this ability to scan is done the way they're proposing.

Tik Hackers dont give one rats ass about your addictions to frozen sports and wood elves. They are looking for information from businesses, such as credit card info(which we store on our computers for specific clients) customer information for identity theft, and all around anything that can be used to make them money.

I'm not denying that holes can/will exist that hackers could exploit

My point about that was that there's already 542876740673046730 holes for an attacker to scan everything already. this wouldn't really add much to the insecurity

your argument about them breaking in to look for illegal smut, or scanning for pirated software is silly

if you have neither, why would it be an issue?
the only people who have anything to worry about with this type of scanning, are those that pirate stuff, and fuck up the system for those that don't

In Canada, to appease the RIAA/MIAA etc they've added a "tax" on blank recordable media. it's a crock that people who have pirated nothing have to pay for stuff that pirates have stolen

what I am saying is how can they tell it is pirated? I use crack programs so I dont have to cough up the fucking CD's everytime I play a game. but if you can...it would be construde as pirated. by their rules they can then delete them because by law I am allowed to make backups of my games.

Lets say they scan your shit and you are using a no cd crack for....Oblivion. You have the game, yet they delete the directory because you are running off your backup CD. Dont tell me you wont be pissed. The fact that you dont have any recourse of action does not bode well. It is still an invasion of privacy Tik, plain and simple. Every last one of my games has been bought and paid for. But again I use backups of my originals most of the time as to not damage my masters.

I don't even know why I get so upset, this shit won't affect me in the least.

They want to implement this shit, I patch it out. XP wants to call home, I patched it out. XP doesn't let me use their site to do updates? I patched it. Microsoft doesn't let me use SP1 or SP2 with my pirated version of windows? I used a patched version.

This would be more of a problem to people who don't know what the fuck they're doing and get anally raped for their ignorance.

Well, I think the part that would have to be tinkered with would be they would have to give you the opportunity to provide the originals

Same as a tax audit. they don't just assume you're lying about your return, they audit it, then clear you, or jail you

Lets say they scan your shit and you are using a no cd crack for....Oblivion. You have the game, yet they delete the directory because you are running off your backup CD. Dont tell me you wont be pissed. The fact that you dont have any recourse of action does not bode well.

Like I said, they'll likely have to request proof of ownership before doing anything like that

it'll be a crock of shit if they can just delete shit without checking

let's back up a step maybe

I don't have an issue with them requesting proof of ownership

if they were just to scan and delete at will, that's obviously wrong for a lot of the reasons listed here

and how do you show proof of ownership? It is still an invasion of privacy plain and simple tik. and Im sure they will have all the bugs worked out of this....RIGHT....

Can you say WMF exploit? Service Pack2? I dont trust Bill gates and his clones anymore than I trust Steve Jobs. The chances of thiem getting this flawless is about the same as me being elected the Canadian Prime Minister and running the frozen place from Ohio.

same way as a tax audit

if they have to spend money to validate the software, the onus will be on them to do a good/decent job of targeting "pirates"

You're assuming the average American will turn off "American Idol" long enough to care.

Which is a lot to assume.
