As most of you know I am in my third year of school for web design and e-commerce. I enjoy doing this, but when it comes down to it all I have wanted to do since I was a small child was to be a veterinarian. I think about this a lot, and I know I really want to do it.

I have been looking into Tuft's college for veterinary medicine, Cummings. However, it looks like I may very well need to throw out four years of school, and head down to a local college such as UMASS and start taking the prereq course. This makes me cringe because I feel like this would mean I have wasted 3 years of my life.

Has anyone here faced a major career change or have any advice for me? Should I just suck it up and finish my last year, have my bachelors and do web management and e-commerce? I have been tearing myself apart over this for the past 2 years and just do not know what to do.

You haven't wasted 3 years of your life. You've spent 3 years finding out what you don't want to do.

Besides, once you become a vet you can make yourself a kickass website!

jobs are to earn money, not enjoy yourself

that's what vacations are for!

if you really WANT to be a vet, find out what's involved, and go from there

just remember
if you're starting over, you've wasted 3 years already

you've also set back your retirement by 3 years

when your done drop the other one like a bad habit

Finish your last year and get your degree. Then you can go to vet school and still be a paid consultant on the side, you'll make enough and not even need to work a fulltime job.

I am trying to look up pre-veterinary programs in Massachusetts/RI area, but I am getting limited information (Boston college's page is fucking blank!) Trying to figure out if I could go to a pre-vet program at night. Its very competitive so I am not sure if its even offered.

and dont try that " When you have a real job shit with me. I do what I enjoy. I have fun and that is the reason I went to college for it. If you dont like your job You basically only do a half assed job.

it should be. otherwise you dont care about the job. My rule for a happy life? Do what you enjoy. If building computers, analising viruses, and designing networks makes you happy then do it.
If fixing dogs and patching up kittens makes you happy, then do it.

sometimes you have to do a job that's not your ideal choice to pay the bills

Although she doesn't seem to be dating a guy from MIT right now, so she should probably have a good career option.

Good luck Vetranary school is supposably harder than medical school. I've heard that from a few Docs.

It might feel like a waste of your life at first, but I'd be willing to bet that skills and ideas you have learned during that time will come in handy to you one way or another through your vet school training. And if you reach your goal and work as a vet for many happy years, what difference do those three little years at the beginning make?

I went to school for 4 years thinking to be a Clincial Laboratory Scientist and taking all my classes aimed towards that career.. only to discover I hated it and would rather have a career in graphic design. I can fully relate to feeling like I wasted a lot of time and money, but I really do feel that some of the classes I took along the way have been a huge asset to me so far.

A job doesn't have to be an extension of who you are. Work to me is just that, work. A person who doesn't define themself with their line of work can find enjoyment at any job whether it's flipping burgers or working with animals (in Korea town it's one in the same) so long as the bills are paid and you can live comfortably. Tikker's not wrong, neither is Kahar, it's different strokes for different folks.

Adivina, I would finish that last year of web design, get your degree, then seek your new career with a decent paying job backing you up while you are in veterinarian school. Who know's, what if while you're on the job you discover something you really enjoy and you decide you want to remain with it?

I agree. I love my job that I do now, and I set my own schedule so I can go to school, and not be so frustrated with not having time to study etc.
