Auto Assault

Post by Lyion »

Anyone check out the beta or try this at all?

http://www.autoassault.com/index.html

It just went Gold, and I've read a little, but haven't seen any reviews yet.

I was in the 2nd wave of beta and it would have needed to get a hell of a lot better since then for me to even think about playing it for free. The fighting consisted of auto aiming and driving in a circle essentially.

Yeah, Jjiaah is playing right now. Still a lot of bugs, but he loves it. You ever hear of a tabletop RPG called Car Wars? This game is essentially Car Wars Online.
I'll have to have him come and give his 2cp about the game.

Excellent game. The best out there IMHO. I've played since mid-beta, and am currently subscribed. This is coming from a guy who had promised Triel (sorry, hun) that I wouldn't pay for another MMO.

But this one is different. It's alot more than the same old stuff in too many MMO's. There's a solid twitch aspect. our turret auto-aims, as it should, but your front ones don't, rear weapons take real skill to use, and melee weapons.... well, they're just plain fun. And your vehicle can have 1 of each mounted at the same time. So, how you kill an opponent is really up to you. There are also many quality skills that make your job easier and more entertaining. The scenery is breathtaking, and just about everything (buildings, rubble, etc) can be destroyed, and most of it drops some kind of loot (like crafting materials etc.)

First, there is no death penalty. If you wreak, you are picked up and dropped off at the last repair station you visited for free and your only downtime is how long it takes your vehicle to fix. As you repair larger hps with each level, about the longest it ever takes is about 30s and you're back on the road. Plus, you can travel similar to GW for a small fee (or even free depending on where you're going) or have INC (the "repair company") repair you on the spot for a larger fee. Not to mention there are many many clicky items in game (similar to heal potions) that heal, boost resists, etc.

Second, missions are very worth doing. They're the fastest method of exp gain. There is little or no grinding at all in this game. You can at your option, but you can progress all the way through without it. The rewards are also in line with the difficulty of the missions more often than not. Mission drops are also not too hard to get. There's no camping for them. You can get all the drops you need before you get frusterated. They're not handed to you on a platter by any means, but there's no AC camping in OOT, if you get my drift. Plus there are plenty of mobs for everyone, so the times where you're fighting against someone else to try to get a mob is very few and far between. It's usually totally avoided.

Third, grouping is not a requirement. It is purely optional. You can solo everything if you desire. However, there are incentives (such as exp bonuses, shared kill counts, etc) to make grouping worthwhile if you decide to do it. One of those advantages is the integrated voice chat. It's only active in your "convoy" (group) and nobody expects you to use it, so if you don't want to you don't have to.

Fourth, crafting is deep, very deep. That's the only way I can describe it. Everything on your vehicle can be built, reverse engineered, repaired, and produced. This includes the chassis's. Also, you can "break" something (reverse-engineer it to make it broken) then build it again and experiment to add new bonuses to it. Completely unique items can be made this way. It's possible to be the only person on the server who knows how to make a top-end weapon, and only allow a few to go to market for example. Once you've made something unique, nobody else can break it to try to copy it. It's unique to you, and it's even "patented" as such. You never have to be a slave to the vendors or the loot system. Everyone gets the crafting loot, so if you don't enjoy crafting, you can make a bundle selling crafting materials to the hard-core crafters. There's no need to price-gouge, as like I said, everyone gets the drops. And those clicky items I mentioned earlier for heals etc.... those can be made too.

Saying that it's Car Wars but online is fairly accurate. I've also seen it related to "Mad Max meets Twisted Metal". Also a ring of truth to it. The best way to describe this game is that it's a breath of fresh air in the MMO community. While it has many of the older MMO aspects, it stands out in the way the game is played... and how much fun it is to do so.

Just my 2c

drive around in circles and shoot other cars, game over. (that is if the buggy piece of shit actually runs on your computer). my beast of a machine had problems with it and the techs were worthless getting it to run in beta.

Well, if your idea of a good time is sitting around for an hour waiting for your health/mana to come back and waiting for your rez penalty to go away.... then yeah, it sucks.

As far as needing a high-end machine, I'm running a Win XP Home SP2, 1.8Ghz P4, 512MB RAM, and a 128MB GF5500 vid. I had to turn a few of the options down, but it runs just fine on my machine. The release is much more stable than beta. Very few issues (like you experienced which were much more common in beta) getting it to run for people now. If beta was all you played, it's a superior product now.

I played the final beta, it ran worse than the beta from 6 months ago, it literally would not run on my machine. I could get 1 frame every 30 seconds. I'm on an Athlon 2800, 2GB RAM, Geforce 6800 GS.

qft

The reviews on this seem to be pretty..unspectacular.

It is a pretty new game, though. Nice to see something different out there.

no, what I'm getting at is that no death penalty type games tends to promote sloppy, unskilled play

there will always be people who are super skilled in every game, but count the number of retards who make it to top tier when there's no death penalty, and you'll be surprised

I guess the best route to go for skill and danger would be permadeath?

I actually think that would make a world live and dangerous.

permadeath is interesting

they did that with the diablo2 ladders, but I don't think the game quality is ready for that yet

The problem is not that difficult. Make levelling easy to a certain point. Give everyone 1 life and if you make it to a certain point without dieing, you can quest for a "reserve" life or two and if you make it even further you can quest for immortality.

Not sure what to tell ya on that man. Your machine should be blowing mine away for performance. Perhaps there's a different compatibility issue or something with drivers, DX, or another resident program.

if Eve had flight patterns like SWG I'd love it. I hate the way flying in space works.
