There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas
You were right Tikker. We suck.

How come Billy Joe sings, "It's April twenty-first, and everybody knows today is Earth Day..."

So, is it the 21st or the 22nd? If it is the 22nd, how come Green Day says it's the 21st?

Earth day is held on the day of the vernal equinox. Next year, I think earth day will be on april 20th.

Vernal equinox was a month ago. It marked the first day of spring.

Sweet, now the hippies have two meaningless holidays to celebrate on the same day.

You're right about this. The first earth day was held in San Francisco on the vernal equinox on March 21, 1970.

Former U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson was Earth Day's co-founder. Nelson got the name after reading about San Fransisco's Earth Day celebration. The first Earth Day was in April 22, 1970. So the US Earth day has alway been observed on April 22.

International Earth Day is celebrated on the March equinox. The first International Earth Day celebration was on March 21, 1971.

So you can thank San Francisco for the origin of Earth day.

The trouble with the maples
And they are quite convinced they are right
They say the oaks are just too greedy
And they grab all the light

Well the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they are made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade
The object of life is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well preserved body, but rather to come screaching in to the grave sidelong in a beatup wreck of a body, loudly proclaiming "WOW What a ride!"
