Sorry, my heart isn't into this argument, partially cuz I don't really care and partially because I have more important things on my mind.

Someone else needs to take over the devil's advocate role.

The only problem is its a cascade effect. The food we eat is shipped on trucks, and gas prices effect that.

Any trips via car or plane are vastly more expensive now.

Even people driving good mileage cars with commutes are going to feel the pinch when their fill up goes from 12 to 36 bucks each time.

The market should compete and the consumer should win, or it is collusion and anti trust that should be fixed.

Some speculator with gas stocks wanting to retire early should not allow Big Oil to raise there prices threefold and assrape the American consumer together.

Hey Lyion, I have friends who work for XOM and know a bunch of people in the offshore industry from my days in Louisiana. Why don't you see what it takes to start your own refining company and put that together. I'll come up with the capital and the expertise, all you need to do it find a site and get preliminary site approval. Let me know when you have that so we can make rediculous amounts of money undercutting BIG OIL. We'll be like modern day Robin Hoods but with serious bank.

PS. I'm serious like a heart attack.

Because Congress would never allow another refinery to be opened. It's been tried. The DNC wouldn't even open it up for debate.

It's been over 30 years since a new refinery was built. Given the clean air permits, the red tape, the environmentalists who don't realize new refineries would actually be better and more environmentally sound, and would work to block it, and the special interests for big oil itself which also would attempt to railroad and prevent it from moving forward. It's just not a good deal.

Big Oil has a stranglehold on refining worse than MS has on the desktop.

Bingo. Give that man a cigar! So who is to blame? Companies that lobby congress to gain favorable laws and regulations passed, the congressmen that vote in these laws or the people who elect them to represent them in Washington? Que the Jeapordy theme music.

@ 2.43 a Gallon

>>> Crude Oil price = 55%

We can’t affect this a whole lot… OPEC calls the shots.

>>> Refining = 22%

Last time the US built a refinery 1976

In fact… we now have less than 149 refineries actively producing Gasoline. That’s about half as many as we had in 1981

Why? It costs too much to build a refinery in the US. So foreign companies refine it and we pay them a premium for the service.

>>> Distribution and Marketing (The Evil Big Oil companies) = 4%

>>> Taxes (The savior government) = 19%

The Federal Government can immediately affect the price of gas by lowering the tax the Federal Government collects from Gasoline sales. The Federal Government could affect the price of Gasoline in the future by allowing more refineries to be built. Not much we can really do about the price of Crude Oil… other than trying to stabilize regions that have the resource (The effectivness of this is very debatable).

Instead, the Federal Government has attacked the smallest portion of the pie… Thank goodness for the government. Perhaps they will hold themselves accountable and fine themselves for gouging with this new series of legislation...

"Liberals believe government should take people's earnings to give to poor people. Conservatives disagree. They think government should confiscate people's earnings and give them to farmers and insolvent banks. The compelling issue to both conservatives and liberals is not whether it is legitimate for government to confiscate one's property to give to another, the debate is over the disposition of the pillage."
