Is there a solution? <kids and smoking>

The statistics are plain. Every day, approximately 4,500 Americans between the ages of 12 and 17 smoke for the first time. Half of them will smoke regularly from that point forward, which comes down to 800,000 new habitual smokers each year.

Is there nothing to be done? The easiest answer to that question is presumably the correct answer: Nothing. There is the blissful escapist factor: Not every smoker contracts emphysema or lung cancer. And there is the tireless diversionary exercise, drawing attention to Aunt Judie, who just died of lung cancer, had suffered from emphysema, and never had a cigarette in her life. Yes, and such data as these would not be withheld from you at the Mayo Clinic. The Mayo people aren't there to account for scientific anomalies. But a certain strength is imparted to people who expose themselves to the even-temperedness one finds there, the quiet confidence in the correctness of scientific lucidity, the corporate anxiety to show a resourceful concern for human health.

If you found yourself with emphysema, and you woke up emperor of the whole world, with absolute power in all matters of production and consumption, what would you do?

Some start some dont. I dont think its an issue we should worry about. Worrying bout kids starting smoking is like worrying if its gonna be sunny or not tomorrow know what im sayin man? Its not really something that can be controlled.

It can be controlled with the proper media focus on it. I and many smokers who started at a young age started because we thought it was cool, and hell I still think it does add a bad edge to a person. That's the first thought that enters a kids head when it comes to smoking. Second thought, oh yeah cancer. Everyone knows smoking is bad for you. I think if the attention was shifted to the cost of cigarettes instead of its slow detrimental effects, there would be less young smokers.

Exactly. That would actually be hard though.

But also illustrates why cigarettes are pure corruption. Spazz, like most smokers rights people, is a talking puppet, fueled by his nicotene addiction. Everyone but the smoker himself can see the lies.

Proclaiming his independence and free will behind nicotene prison bars.

Or lamenting how bad smoking is for you, yet not quitting, in garg's case. One day she'll wonder why her kids smoke, while they watch her take long slow pulls from her menthol oxygen tank.

Its all just a ludicrous circle of bullshit.

Im not for making them illegal. But they should be banned in most public places, and should only be sold where hard liquor can be sold.

What lies? Cigarettes are bad and they kill peeps. I don't see what hidden danger there is in that statement. It's a mental and physical addiction, not like someone pulled the wool over our eyes and we fell for it. We know smoking is bad, but we make the choice to continue to kill ourselves to sustain our nagging habit (aka the monkey on my back).

I'll tell you right now mofish, and I can speak for Garg and spazz, but WE know how bad smoking is for you 10 times over what a non smoker knows. We live it. We're the ones that hock the disgusting shit from our lungs every few months. We're the ones who are short of breath. It's not a giant mystery that smoking is bad so try not to make it sound like we're the autonomous pawns who don't know any better. We know better, but we make a choice to endulge our habit and calm down the eeking money vs. taking better care of our health.

PS - I don't know anyone who has ever died of second hand smoke and I don't know anyone who know's anyone who has died of secondhand smoke.

The lie is the being fooled into believing you really enjoy it. Do you think any sane person would sit there and actually say they enjoy coughing, wheezing, and hacking all the time? That they'd opt to have half the breathing capacity they used to and smell like rancid smoke all the time?

If you want to keep smoking, hey, it's your life. Have at it.
Just know that the nicotine in the cigs is where the lies are. You enjoy it because that's exactly what the chemicals in the cigs WANT you to feel.
I enjoyed smoking a lot. I really did. My favorite time to smoke was especially when drinking. It enhanced the alcohol.

Since I have quit, I can't understand what in the world I ever found so enjoyable about smokng at all.

You know what's the killing kids right now? Obesity. Smoking is out, fat is in and we need to put a stop to it, pronto! Regulate what our children eat and drink, no more soft-drinks or twinkies at schools. Have warning labels on all fast food. Lets put candy BEHIND the counter and have people show ID to purchase. Even if we save one fat kid from a life of diabetes or heart disease, it's worth it!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it isn't the nicotine that's addictive is it? I thought it was all the bullshit chemicals they put into the cigs that made tghem addictive.

On the contrary, nicotine itself is more physically addictive than opiates.

I started smoking when I was 11 years old. I quit 3 days after my father died of lung cancer 8 years ago. Be a quitter, you really do feel better without it Garg. Might not save ya from the inevitable but then again, it might. And between now and then you will have a better life. Hardest thing I ever did though. Good luck with that, I'll say a prayer for ya.

I almost quit last time I went to Maine for two weeks. I am actually seeing a octor about it next month. I am a little more than terrified at this prospect. But hell, there are worse habits I have kicked.
