Fifth-grader may not sing anti-Bush song

Postby Phlegm » Fri May 05, 2006 10:11 pm

From United Press International:

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla., May 5 (UPI) -- A Coral Springs, Fla., school principal has forbidden a fifth-grader from singing a Bush-bashing ballad at her school talent show, calling it inappropriate.

The song, "Dear Mr. President" -- performed and co-written by pop singer Pink -- criticizes President George W. Bush for the war in Iraq and other policies, including his stance on gay rights, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

Molly Shoul, 10, said she liked the way the song addressed the president directly.

"He should try to listen to what other people say, not just himself," she said.

School district spokeswoman Nadine Drew said the song would be inappropriate for the talent show, because it refers to drug use, war, abortion and gay rights -- and contains profanity.

"This is an elementary school that includes kindergarteners and pre-K students," said Drew.

Molly's mother, Nancy Shoul, sees politics in the school's refusal to let Molly sing the song.

"If this was a student singing a pro-administration song, no one would quibble with it," she said.

the only sound that should be coming from smarmy mouthed little twats like that should be "whahahahAAAAAA!" from the repeated and frequent beatings.

And single minded internet tough guys wouldn't call her a "little brat" either.

The Lyrics:

Dear Mr. President
Come take a walk with me
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep
What do you feel when you look in the mirror
Are you proud

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why

Dear Mr. President
Were you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
How can you say
No child is left behind
We're not dumb and we're not blind
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye

Let me tell you bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh

How do you sleep at night
How do you walk with your head held high
Dear Mr. President
You'd never take a walk with me
Would you

This is appropriate for pre-schoolers and kindergarteners how?

I think they pushed it a but by saying "and contains profanity". My first responce was, if it contained profanity it shouldn't be allowed, though after hearing it, the only word in it that would be considered profanity is the same word the kids would hear in church. I did the whole Sunday School thing until I was kicked out (Asked to many questions), the word Hell was used constantly.

School is in a tuff stop though, they dont allow it, they get hell for it. If they do allow it, they still get hell for it. I wonder how much of what is done is "appropriate" for Pre K.

It's not. It was written by her leftist wacko guardian or "parent" (I use that term loosely), but she's old enough to know better.

Hate to brake it to you but you dont have to be a leftist to not like bush, and all negative bush stuff is generated by wacko leftists.

I know that, but it's still painstakingly obvious as several leftist views are cited in her poetic drivel.

School is not a place for politics OR religion. It's a place to learn how to read, write and add 2 + fucking 2. Nothing more.

Teaching how the government is supposed to work? Yes. But, pushing political leanings on kids, or for that matter endulging students who want to sign Pro or Anti Bush songs? No.

I hate Bush as much as the next person, but a school is not a place to debate the correctness of his or anyone else's administration.

Yep, politics should be severely banned in lower grades, and only allowed limited, controlled access into the classroom starting in high school.

College, open wide with both barrels. But lower education should be reserved strictly for teaching basics, science, history, math, skills.

I say good. People not bein intrested in politics is half of led us to having such shitty leaders. Maybe more kids should start thinking about there country and the things that go on in it. I wouldnt say its unheard of for someone young to start thinking about the world and forming opinions. Guys here are allways so quick to assume the worst talk shit and put anyone down :) World needs to lighten up its a kid and a song. Would anyone in the building be harmed if she sang it ? If so how ? Same questions if it was pro gw. I think everyone in this country needs to really think about free speech and if its really so bad to hear something that offends us once in a while.

wrong. Our schools are overflowing with underqualified leftwing retards as it is who can't even get students to learn the basics of education. The last things these idiots should be doing is spreading their liberal, tree-hugging, hippie propaganda on the governments dime...We already have more than enough potheads, losers and homosexuals in this country who voted for John Kerry. We do not need anymore.

I think the point is that it's a song that references cocaine and a lot of pretty heavy issues and it's being sung to pre-K children and that's not really appropriate...

when i was in high school, our history teacher decided to explain difference between democrats and republicans thusly
democrats are the party for people who like freedom
republicans are the party for rich white people

i really had issues with that kind of idiocy

he split the class in half to create a "senate" one half democrat one hald republican
i asked if i could instead be the lone libertarian (at the time there was a single libertarian in the senate from alaska), he said no because libertairians beleived in legalizing drugs. when i stated its only because the constitution forbids federal government involvment in anything not explididly laid out as government powers.
he ended up letting me be a republican
sad thing is only one other student in the class knew what admendment i was refering to

good times good times

You and I both know that many on the right considered homosexuality to be a disease that effects liberals and that this would be a wonderful drug free land covered in oil if you could just get rid of the liberals. Most just wont come right out and say it in those words.
