$500 ps3

Post by Thon »

dunno if the price was posted in any of the other threads, but jebus

or $600 if you get the bigger hard drive. that's a lot of money to play grand theft auto a few months before it comes out on the PC.

If it has a Blu Ray drive it'll be worth every penny.

I'll be nabbing one.

$500 for the low end? That's crazy. Blu-ray and HD DVD are not going to take hold and are both a waste of money. People are not going to want to adopt a new format now that DVD players and media are getting so cheap. In 3-5 years maybe folks will be ready for a new format. They should have ditched the drive and brought the PS3 out with a regular DVD drive for the same price as the 360.

The fucking insane amount of storage you can get off of Blu-ray is well worth the transition.

I can just imagine the games able to be made with these things.

I have yet to see a decent game fill up a single sided DVD. In 3-5 years time there will be a device that leapfrogs blu-ray in every aspect. Neither HD or Bluray are a revolutionary jump in technology.

500 bucks isn't bad considering these consoles are becoming computers. If the thing can access the internet and browse I would say it's worth it.

I hate CDs and DVDs for how easily they can be scratched. Too bad Blu Ray didn't chage that part.

What I want is the ability for it to act as a media hub, join my network and allow me to stream movies/music to it

that would make it worth the $500 for me

I don't think it requires MCE but I could be wrong... anyhow, for $!00 and an hour of your time you can get an Xbox to do what you want.

i'm 99% positive it requires MCE. that was one of the big reasons I didn't bother with an Xbox

yeah, here's from the xbox support site:
Xbox 360 Media Setup
With Xbox 360, you can:

Windows Media Center

Connect to a computer running Windows Media Center and

* Listen to your music collection
* View pictures
* Watch live TV
* Pause and replay live TV
* Record TV shows then watch them later
* Watch Videos
* Download and watch movies
* Buy music online

Music

Pictures

Connect to a computer running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and

* Listen to your music collection
* View pictures

unless you have MCE you can't stream video
You can't natively record tv with the xbox either. it uses MCE functionality to do that

I guess this allows any Windows, OSX or Linux machine to serve any media including internet radio etc to a 360 on your network.

I had twonkyvision for a while actually. it's a UPnP streamer, and really really basic on the functionality side.

Xbox was pretty close, but at this point, i'm still willing to wait for ps3, and Wii(wtf) to come out and compare all 3
