I haven't done any research on the subject but how is something like this different than networking a 360 to your regular PC and using it as a media center extension?

360 forces you to use media center edition as the server

360 can't record tv either, i don't think

it definately can't do picture in picture, rip dvd's and encode them as divx, etc etc

The specs on it are not so hot, though probably more then enough to do what it needs except maybe the hd.

yeah, found the PDF spect sheet. I'm still intrigued, especially if it can be upgraded at all because I have a couple half gig sticks laying around and a couple larger HDs.

erm, it's a via chipset

ie, it does audio/video in hardware, so doesn't need to be beefy with cpu/ram

the HDD isn't that important either because it's networked (ie, you can record to a network share, or stream from a network share to it)
