How many of you earn money thru gaming?
Just a small survey for my personal reference. How many of you earn money thru gaming?
Either by having a bet with someone, Selling items / in game money or even winning competitions. I'm talking about not a one time deal but on a regular basis...

I met a chinese gold farmer last weekend in Winterspring, I always thought that was a myth......

The object of life is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well preserved body, but rather to come screaching in to the grave sidelong in a beatup wreck of a body, loudly proclaiming "WOW What a ride!"
my brother plays smash bro's melee professionaly, he just won $400 a few weeks ago at a ohio tourney, and he's flying down to dallas this weekend for a MLG tourney. they call themselves major league gaming, and organize halo 2 and ssbm tournaments. i think harrison posted a link to them in another thread, and about how they're going to be on TV soon.
they invited him to their New York tournament(the first one they were taping). but the judge said no out of state travel
. he's "free" now though

Befriending a chinese gold farmer is the easiest way to make money. Since they are always looking for someone to trust that isn't the person who shares their account, they are easy to take advantage of. Just hold their money/ high end items so their partner doesn't steal them. After gathering a bunch of gold just put them on ignore. I've heard of people making thousands of gold doing this on different toons.
Not that I would take advantage like that. I would honestly feel guilty.

Online poker brings in about 50-150 bucks a week usually although I've been losing lately and I've been evening out by 2 weeks end.
I used to play Guilty Gear XX #R, Marvel vs. Capcom II and Street Fighter 3rd Strike proffessionally and that brought in 150-450 a week although I never technically won a tournament >:O. At the EVO fighting game worldwide tourney in Guilty Gear I was 2 places shy of a 3000 grand prize and placed top 7 places shy of another 3000 grand prize in Street Fighter 3rd Strike and got 2nd Place in Marvel Capcom II. Winner take all is a bitch.
When I retired from EQ I'd log on occasionally to solo trak for Bard Epics and sold the pp from that on PA. I also kept the loots from Trak and made a little extra from those too.

fuck i played halo 2 against this MLG player last night when we were all at my friend's house. me and my friend were around 25ish but this guy is like 38 on live and like 27 in team snipers alone... we did 2 vs. 1 and he got twice as many points as us... it was fucked up, i've never seen somebody with that kind of skill
When someone takes the fun out of a game and turns it into their job/life they go far beyond anything ANY casual player will EVER do.
I compete in CAL for Natural Selection, but I don't take it seriously like the fucking brazilians do. They exploit every single possible flaw the game has for an advantage over you. If you play legitimately 100%, you will NOT beat them.

The MLG guy didn't cheat at all... he just has it down to perfection. He can keep just far enough away so your melees all miss, he can stick you with grenades 95% of the time, he can no scope with the sniper rifle 100% of the time, he's got mad crazy movement patterns that make it really hard to aim at him, etc. It's just insane. That's probably how the designers want you to play the game.
Technically the "exploiting" I'm talking about isn't cheating per se.
Bunny hopping for example is an exploit of the movement system that allows you to jump in a specific pattern without outside help (program or script etc.) to move A LOT faster than you would normally. (scripts can perfect it even moreso)
I do this in NS. I know it's an "exploit" but it's an accepted one in the community and is widely used and hard to perfect on a PER MAP basis.
Scripting used in combination with such movements is fucking ridiculous and gives you a monumental edge over people who find scripting to be lame (me), but is still accepted in the community.
This is what keeps me in the Amateur league. I refuse to script and/or use certain "techniques" as I deem them pathetically lame.
Pros don't care, and will do anything until it's deemed a cheat by the league and/or the community.
That MLG guy most likely knows every single in/out of that game's engine and everything he can "exploit" an edge out of.

As an added note, I can't even play on certain servers without being banned/kicked.
The style of my play is above that of a normal casual player and so they will automatically think I am aimbotting, wallhacking, speedhacking etc.
I play versus the pros and they rape my asshole without lube a lot of the time.

yeah that's what it's like. that's why playing online against newbies sucks. i always like to play against people that are a lot better than me
but yeah this MLG guy is a good friend of mine and he's basically a marijuana smoking street dweller. He just plays a lot... and practice makes perfect. And there are tons of exploits in Halo but they're pretty much all geometry-based, like super jumps in certain levels etc. I don't think they're cheap at all because they're actually pretty hard to pull off and I think that if you have the knowledge, use it.
He's fucking crazy with snipers and BRs and SMGs and shit and I accept that I'm not, but when we switched it to shotguns only I fucking wrecked shop. I'm a scrap fighter in that game. The difference is seriously learning how to fly by radar and use look sensitivity 9. 10 makes the BR unaimable.
Yes, we are halo gangsters

cool.. This is my personal experience on earning RL cash from gaming..
Its started with winning tournaments for Counter Strike 6-7 years back. Then side bets on Counter Strike 1 vs 1 was earning me 100-150 USD a day. Then i quit CS. Started earning money from marshalling tourneys on CS.
Then there was one point i got hooked to GunBound. Which earn me 0 for a few months. Then my brother forced me to start this MMORPG game called Knight Online 3 years ago. Thats when i started as a noob, played my way up and paid RL Cash for the first time to buy items to equipt my character. Then i realised dang if people can earn money why can't i?
So since then. I've been selling in game items for RL cash. :p ACtually earning more than my salary..
Harrison @ Selling items and still playing the game is still as fun. :p earning money and enjoying the game :p But if you are talking about exploiting bugs like Bunnyhopping, yea id agree with you it ruins everything.

Yeah, I don't find jumps lame. Those are almost always based on your skill with them.
