Pa. skydiver slips from harness and dies

Postby Narrock » Sun May 28, 2006 9:21 am

STERLING, Ohio - A first-time skydiver slipped from her harness during a jump Saturday and fell to her death, authorities said.

The 44-year-old woman from West Chester, Pa., was participating in a tandem jump, her first with the AerOhio Skydiving school near Sterling, about 40 miles south of Cleveland, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's office.

The victim's name was withheld pending notification of her family.

During tandem jumps, a novice skydiver is harnessed to the chest of an experienced jumper. When the parachute is deployed, the experienced skydiver guides the team to the ground.

A preliminary investigation by the sheriff's office indicated the woman slipped from the harness after the parachute opened.

It is not known how far the woman fell, and the sheriff's office did not release any further details.

A message seeking comment was left Saturday night at AerOhio Skydiving.

Um... how the hell do you "slip" out of the harness of a trained professional skydiver?

she was probably a fatty and couldn't buckle the thing properly over her massive cheese-in-a-can induced girth.

Free falling with the knowledge that you are going to die by hitting the ground at terminal velocity must really suck.

Nah, she was probably thinking 'should I tuck and roll when I hit the ground'.

these stories sicken me. I can't imagine having the nerve to do that, and the entire point of a thrill is to be scared out of your mind without reprocussion, and when something like this happens, well..talk about an emotional death..like ginz said it must really suck. all that fear and you ended up being right...

Apparently most people who have their chutes fail die of a heart attack before they hit the ground, if that's any condolence.

I doubt hitting the ground would be very painful anyways. I'd think you'd die almost instantly.

I think I'd try and aim for something or someone on the ground. Hey, if I'm gonna die, I might as well try and inflict some collateral damage when I go!

I think you die from cardiac arrest before yo hit the ground. I think we did a study on this, I'm not positive though

Id make myself into a bullet shape and make sure that my head slams into the ground first insuring an instant death.... don't wanna turn up to get lucky like Vesna Vulovic.....damn how do you survive a fall from 33,000 feet? I don't think I can survive a 12 ft jump from my roof.
