Josh Howard is a restricted FA but Cuban will basically cut off his leg to keep him. He's going nowhere. The scariest thing is, Josh Howard is the cheapest non-rookie on the roster and he's our second best player. He's about to become a very very rich man.

Kieth Van Horn is an unrestricted FA who will make considerably less than the $14million we are paying him right now (2nd highest on the team, 11th highest in the league). We'd like to keep him but we don't have enough cap to pay him what he could make elsewhere. We'd probably offer him $3-4m with a 2-3year deal and he could probably make $5m on a 4-5 year deal elsewhere. He's a good player, works hard... he'll do well for a lot of teams.

Jason Terry is an unrestricted FA... and that's the tricky one. If we win the finals, his value jumps up tremendously. All year long... even late into the year... even into the playoffs... people were talking about this situation. Devin Harris IS the future of the Mavericks point-guard, but he's... just... he's not exactly what Avery needs right now. He proved that in game 6 against the Spurs when Terry was suspended... he absolutely STUNK out there. That TOTALLY raised Terry's Maverick market value... all of the sudden, the idea of running the team with 'just' Harris became a bit scarier. The main problem is... how much is Cuban willing to risk letting another solid point-guard walk away from Dallas - for nothing? Terry is a CLUTCH shooter and he's completely saved us at least 20 times over the past 2 years. When he's out there playing the 2 with Devin at the 1, we look almost unstoppable. Will Cuban match the best offer that Terry gets? Will Terry really leave Dallas? It's a tough call.

DJ Mbenga is a VERY solid center... some even say that we should ditch Diop and Dampier... he's THAT promising. I say that's fucking crazy bullshit, but... whatever. He's super super athletic, a hard runner... a great shot-blocker... and he's making NOTHING. He's not a secret anymore and 2/3rds of the league is interested in him. He's totally unrestricted and we won't have a chance at keeping him here. He has no reason to play 3rd center for pennies when he could START for millions. Seriously, watch this guy because he's going to be a stud someday.

Darrell Armstrong is another unrestricted FA but I suspect Avery will keep him around. He's basically 'another' Avery. What AJ was to Dallas back in 03... he is to our team. He's our vocal locker-room leader. He's HUGE for our morale... and he's totally content making the vet-minimum until he retires, to then join the Mavs coaching staff =p. He won't go anywhere unless some team decides he's worth a few million... and that'd be a really weird set of circumstances.

I don't think you'll be able to keep Jason Terry. If you're over the cap, which I imagine you are, you can't sign anyone for more than the MLE which is 5.5mil a year.

Even if the guy stinks it up and Dallas gets swept, he'd still get more than a MLE contract, which means he'd have to want to take a pretty hefty pay cut to stay where he is.

You could always go after Mike James in a S&T or offer that MLE to Sam Cassel but that's getting a little ahead of ourselves I think.

Josh Howard is restricted so you can pretty much offer whatever you want and I'm sure you will. I'm pretty sure you could replace what VanHorn is giving you with about 10 forwards in the league.

I thought a team can go over the cap to sign their own free agents.

LARRY BIRD EXCEPTION -- Players who qualify for this exception are called "Qualifying Veteran Free Agents" in the CBA, and this exception is a component of the Veteran Free Agent exception. This exception allows teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own free agents, up to the player's maximum salary. The player must have played for three seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent. This means a player can obtain "Bird rights" by playing under three one-year contracts, a single contract of at least three years, or any combination. It also means that when a player is traded, his Bird rights are traded with him, and his new team can use the Bird exception to re-sign him. These contracts can be up to six years in length. A player can receive raises up to 10.5% of the salary in the first season of the contract.

Using this exception, a team may re-sign its own free agent for 175% of his salary the previous season or the average player salary, whichever is greater. Early Bird contracts must be for at least two seasons (which limits this exception's usefulness -- it's often better to take a lower salary for one more season and then have the full Bird exception available the next season) and no longer than five seasons. A player can receive raises up to 10.5% of the salary in the first season of the contract using this exception.

This exception allows a team to re-sign its own free agent to a salary starting at 120% of the player's salary in the previous season, 120% of the minimum salary, or the amount needed to tender a qualifying offer whichever is greater. Raises are limited to 8% of the salary in the first year of the contract, and contracts are limited to five seasons when this exception is used.

The NBA salary caps is really fucking soft. There are a bunch of other exceptions beside the Bird ones; MID-LEVEL SALARY EXCEPTION, BI-ANNUAL EXCEPTION, ROOKIE EXCEPTION, MINIMUM PLAYER SALARY EXCEPTION, TRADED PLAYER EXCEPTION, DISABLED PLAYER EXCEPTION, and REINSTATEMENT EXCEPTION.

Yeah, but sometimes teams do get nailed by it regardless of how soft it is. If teams really could spend whatever they wanted to sign their own free agents, there's no way in hell Golden State would've let Arenas walk to the Wizards.

They couldn't, the most they could offer him under the cap was some really low number, wasn't even the mid-level.

IMO, it's the best salary cap in the majors. The NFL has a nice cap but the players and owners have a HORRIBLE relationship.

His main problem was foul trouble, he wouldn't really move with people but swipe with his arms. He could never stay in games for any length of time because of it. He's a big body and a set of extra fouls with the way his game is now

His arms are shorter than yours Snero that was his biggest problem.

That and he ALWAYS moved on his picks ALWAYS. Sometimes (most of the time) he got called for it, and sometimes the refs were like, I guess we'll let it go but this dumb boob just aint getting it.
