They have Klinsmann as the head coach, and he was an extremely adept player. I hope he can coach well too. Whatever happened to Franz Beckenbauer? World-Mayor bans Japan fans from jumping into Rhine

BONN, Germany, June 3 (Reuters) - The mayor of Bonn has banned over-exuberant Japanese fans from jumping into the river Rhine during the World Cup.

Thousands of ecstatic fans celebrated the progress of co-hosts Japan into the last 16 four years ago by leaping into a river in downtown Osaka. Several injuries were reported.

Bonn city officials are anxious to avoid a repeat should Japan advance from World Cup Group F and have warned visitors of the Rhine's strong current.

"The quality of water is fine but the current is very strong so it is extremely dangerous," Bonn Mayor Baerbel Dieckmann told reporters. "We will ban supporters from swimming in the river."

Japan's fans earned a glowing reputation at the team's first World Cup appearance in France eight years ago when they stayed behind after matches to collect and dispose of their litter.

They were gracious hosts in 2002 and many Japanese fans shed their normal reserve in the celebrations that followed their success in the group stages.

Dude, the only padding soccer players wear is a shin guard. Injuries on the soccer field are extremely painful and can also stop your career in certain instances.

*shrug* I played it as a kid until I destroyed my knee. When you now physically have difficulties even walking slowly, playing soccer any more is kind of out of the question. There's a LOT more going on in the game than you seem to think.

I had a lot of fun with it actually, despite the fact I would've preferred to have been playing football. There's actually a TON of physical contact during the game where people are fighting for position around the ball. Not arguing that people don't tend to be overly dramatic on dives at times, but otehr times, some of what they're getting hit with hurts like a mother. You try getting hit with a foot full of cleats, hard, in your calf with no padding whatsoever and see if you don't react, or if you don't go flying and do a bit of grabbing at your shins when a leg whip takes out your ankles.

Hell, I broke a friend of mine's foot with a misplaced wind-up kick once. Caught him in the arch of his foot, and *crack*. I played defensive sweeper. (3 forwards, 3 midfielders, 3 defense, and I roamed the gap between defense and midfield) I wasn't fast enough to be a forward, but I was good enough at seeing the flow of the attack and at least quick enough to get to that point on D so as to overload the ball carrier or stuff up a passing lane. I also tended to play defense in soccer with the same mentality as a Linebacker in football. You came into my area, I was going to hurt you. I nearly got tossed out of a game once for sending some guy flying, when I did a shoulder check into the middle of his chest as he was running full tilt, sending him flying where he landed in a crumpled heap. Ref whipped out yellow card and was screaming at me that I was inches from a red card, and that this was soccer, not football. I just gave him a disgusted look and walked away. rofl.

I've played soccer from the time I was 8-12, then again from college until this past summer

I'm not talking about legitimate injuries, but rather the diving fake "omg he is killing me" acts

anyways, i vote Brazil easy. if teams like Chelsea could play instead of all of England, I think Chelsea > Brazil. or Arsenal
