Why is it so hard for metro-urbanites to believe that yes, some people actually believe that standing up for themselves in the face of imminent danger, or to defend someone else in the same situation(even a complete stranger) is the right thing to do? And that they would do it?

Are you that wrapped up in self preservation? Or is it some kind of jealousy that someone you consider to be your lesser actually has the character to do it?

It happens every day, if you happened to look for that sort of thing. Most of it just never makes the national media. These people aren't special or different or crazy or stupid. They simply realize the perfectly rational fact that the police aren't there to save you, and if it were possible for them to be everywhere at any time this would be a pretty shitty country to live in.

this has nothing to do with self defense or protecting somebody else though, they disarmed the man and when he tried to run away they chased him with pipes, that is in no way self defense. That is playing vigilantly and is illegal.

I live in a very mixed community. My apartment hovers over one of the best seaside bar districts in connecticut and there is always a heap load of activity. I'm not going to get involved in a bar incident (on behalf of someone I don't know) only because my home is two feet away. Maybe where you come from a fight is a fight and it's finished. Around here, a fight is a fight, then the guy you are fighting rounds up twelve of his cousins and they break into your house while your sleeping and beat the shit out of you with baseball bats. There is no way I am going to risk something like that happening when my girlfriend sleeps over four nights a week. So in short, I look out for myself, my family and my friends first and foremost. When it comes to brawls between strangers, I let the authorities handle it. Granted, there are certain situations where I might feel obligated to help but in a general sense, it's a spectator sport.

Maybe in your neck of the trailer park but the rest of civilization has jobs and duties that they perform, a lot of which does not include law enforcement. Cops are cops because they got trained and passed the test. Anyone else doing their job doesn't know what the fuck they are doing. Obviously for lack of a better thing to do you somehow feel it's your right to participate in those fights with random people. Do your self a favor and instead of doing that, go back to school.

Granted, I don't like everything Old Navy sells, but they pretty much have it nailed as to what is the popular 'casual' fashion. Their prices are very good too. Hey, you can't beat 2 pair of flip-flops for 5 bucks! I buy my business attire at Kohl's and Nordstrom's.

No, I just don't buy cheap clothes. Old Navy sucks. You can buy the same clothes with 1000% better construction and design at Banana Republic.

At least buy stuff from the GAP if you're going to buy from those clothing affiliates. Old Navy's quality is totally reflected in its price tag. Like Ross.

Kohl's I dunno, isn't that just a big store like JC Penney's? but Nordstrom's is $$. I like attention to detail in my clothes and durable construction. Old Navy doesn't give me either one of those compared to BR or Brooks Bros. etc.

So really I should be asking you why are you going with the grain and buying cheap worthless clothes when you can be buying quality stuff that lasts longer than half a year

Cheap plain plants that wear out after a few months. I wear BR pants when I work and I had a pair for 8 months before it started showing signs of wear on the knee. They have the durability of Dickies with less weight and more comfort. I hate buying cheap clothes because of lasting issues... they never last very long and you end up buying a bunch of pairs of really cheap pants instead of a couple pairs of expensive pants that will last you 10x longer
