28th amendment to the U.S. Constitution underway...

Postby Narrock » Fri Jun 16, 2006 2:31 pm

All they need is 1 more yes vote to pass the "illegal to desecrate the U.S. flag" amendment. Best news I've seen in a L O N G time. Oh, and this has nothing to do with "freedom of speech." You can still say whatever you want. The flag is a symbol of what America stands for. You should be proud to wave the flag high. The flag doesn't represent one side of the political fence or the other. If you burn a U.S. flag then you are a JERK, and hopefully will spend some time behind bars from now on if they catch you desecrating it.

Oh, and this calls for some celebratory icons, because it will pass in short time:

I believe in freedom of sppech and freedom of the press and the right to protest.... All that jazz. But I do *retch* agree with Mindia *retch* Burning the flag should be unconstitutional.

I'm all for this. Hopefully we can put more Commies, Liberals and Hippies in prison over this.

I'd have to agree with the others, this should have been finalized a long time ago, and I can't wait for the day it is a law.

I'm actually in favor of allowing it to stay legal. No, it's not something that should be done willy-nilly, but if you're trying to make a dramatic and extremely potent symbolic statement, there's really nothing non-violent that would surpass it, and I'll never condone violent protest, no matter the end.

I furthermore agree, that given all of the REAL problems going on in this country, spending time worrying about such a trivial issue is basically time wasted. Work on REAL problems, not something so trivial.

I can't disagree there, but on the other hand, why does the US need more drama?

I think it should be illegal. Hippies are annoying enough before they start burning fags. I mean flags.

The few times I've seen videos of someone burning a flag in the US, it reminds me of what a great country this can be: that people are free enough that they can even choose to be morons and burn the very representation of the country without having goons with guns sent after them for it - as they would in most backwards parts of the world.

Make it illegal, and you're making a blow to free speech in a big way. It says loud and clear that expression is not acceptable if it is heavily against the government.

It's exactly the same line of reasoning that would make criticising the president illegal - which I'm sure could easily come down the line in a few decades if this precadent is set.

-

That aside, wtf is up with these people making legislature on all these inane topics - at such a hectic time in history? It's pretty much just another way to divert the public's attention from the fact that the current administration is failing terribly. Pathetic.

Symbols are for the symbol minded like George Carlin said. This should stay out of the constitution. I agree with Arlos on every point in this one.

Also

Also our country has so many problems is makes me sick that our RULERS have time to argue about such trivial things as queers and burning flags

I actually understood what spazz said. :ugh:

considering the founding fathers of this country burned the English flag im surprised so many are for limiting free speach

burning symbols in effigy is a long honored tradition in protests and that should include the american flag.

hey what better way to show your anger and frustration over an imoral war agaisnt unknown opponents then burning the symbol of american imperialism

Burn a picture of Bush.
Burn a picture of the white house.
Burn a picture of me.
Burn anything you feel like.

Burn the flag and I have a problem.
