A lil help please computer sirs

Post by DangerPaul »

In my office, I have one machine that stores all the files we use. All the other machines in the company access it, it is not a server in the normal sense, everything is peer-to-peer. I need someone who is up to date on new computer stuff to design me an inexpensive PC (I mean $1000 or less for just the tower) that will be a screaming eagle. This is not a gaming rig, so no pretty graphics or anything are required.

Also, I need a GOOD router for my network to share all my infos across the land... thank you.

Why not buy a real used server? You can find all kinds of server pulls on ebay. I have an old compaq proliant that I use. Raid 5, dual processor, plenty of ram etc and the whole thing cost less than $100. Throw linux on it and you have a professional quality server for cheap, otherwise, buy a real copy of Windows Server 2003. I think you can find legit copies for around $700.

If you need a good router, look in to picking up a used Cisco 1721.

Before you all groan...

Check with the dell used outlet. can usually get a really nice server with windows server (can get anything from 2000 to 2003) preloaded and included in the price. I picked up a 2000 server with good specs for about 500$ in 2003. Havn't regreted that purchase yet.

Dell or Penguin Computing. We get almost all our new servers through them and in general they are really good. Maybe a Dell PowerEdge 830 or a Penguin Altus 1300 Server. The dell you can bring the price down on if you get it without an OS.

If you are serious about a good router, get a cisco.

Remember I am no longer technical savvy like I was when I was younger, plus I am rarely in the office, so basic is better because people who work here are computer illiterate.

How large is your network, how much bandwidth are you pumping through this server daily.

If you want "basic", buy a solid server, set it up and forget it. Using desktop quality components in a file server is asking for trouble. Get something with hard disk and power supply redundancy since those are the two things that go most often on computers.

I'll build it for you. If you are willing to sacrifice error protecting buffered memory and what not I can can put the savings towards power.

My company is building the fastest machines on the market right now for the money... I shit you not. Our pricing is about on par with CyberPower Systems, except are systems aren't complete shit put together by retards with 2 weeks experience fresh out of micr0sk33lz.

PM me if you would like me to draft something up for you and we'll get down to details.

Some of the higher end dell servers really are not that bad. We have a bunch of 1800's that have been running great for a long time. The server NT runs on is a dell and has been rebooted 1 time in 3 years (kernel upgrade).

DoD DISA uses PowerEdge 2850s. I haven't got to play with one but we have 70 of them waiting to be allocated. I never hear about failures nor have I ever had to ship one back for repairs.

I guess I should have been a little more clear... I think Dells lower end servers are crap. We have had nothing but problems with them. I dont have that much hands on experience with the more enterprise stuff.
