Williams to play for Toronto

Postby Phlegm » Fri May 19, 2006 11:32 am

From ESPN:

The Miami Dolphins will allow Ricky Williams to play for the Toronto Argonauts as long as they have it in writing that he will be released at the end of the CFL season, the Miami Herald reported Friday, citing a source close to the Argos.

The Argonauts were expected to comply with that request as early as Friday, the newspaper reported, allowing Williams and his agent, Leigh Steinberg, to neogiate a deal with the CFL team. The Herald reported Steinberg declined comment Thursday.

The Argonauts secured Williams' CFL rights when the running back was suspended for a year by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The team's training camp starts Sunday, and the team opens its regular season June 16.

The Dolphins had been reluctant to let Williams play in Canada due to the risk of injury, but are apparently relenting. Williams has three children and a fourth on the way and has reportedly earned $270,000 since December 2003, the Herald reported. He owes the Dolphins $8.6 million for breaching his contract when he retired in 2004.

"We want Ricky back on our team," Dolphins coach Nick Saban told the Herald earlier this month. "Ricky doesn't need to go to Canada to prove anything to us." But Saban also said the Dolphins would "give him the opportunity to do it if it's something that he needed to do or really wanted to do."

Williams rushed for 743 yards and six touchdowns last season.

It's funny cause I rooted for Miami last year ONLY because he was on the team. I don't know anything about his football skills, I just think it's awesome he would pass up millions to go smoke up with his buddies. I'll be casually following the argos if they land him.

I'm curious to see how he fares in the faster paced league

I wonder if he'll get up here, find all the weed, and just decide to stay

Ricky is the fucking man. Always liked him, always will. Hope he rips that league a new one.

He has great running skills Zan. His hands are small so he is prone to fumble a bit more than your average back. But he is a beast on the firld if healthy and motivated.
You were right Tikker. We suck.

CFL is a throwing league, not a running league

3 downs instead of 4 forces you to throw rather than try to grind it out as much as you can in the NFL

that being said, I'm curious to see how he does. CFL is just a different game from the NFL. certain things translate pretty well, but others don't

As I recall reading on ESPN, he had the 4th most rushing yards in the CFL at the time of the injury. Not too awful for someone you claim is unsuited for that style of game.

well in his defense, over the last few years kerry joseph has been at the top, or near the top in rushing yards. Sad to see no josh ranek this year in that list

CFL is more about smaller really quick guys than big rumblers

ie, jerome bettis wouldn't do anywhere nearly as well in the CFL compared to say, Eric Metcalf

just like the guys who are currently the leading rushers wouldn't do nearly as well in the grind em out style of the NFL

talking about how miami would have done with harrington got me thinking about Ricky Williams, and how some people (vonk jeje) assumed he'd rock the CFL

POS Name TM Att Yards TD Avg
RB Charles Roberts WIN 303 1609 10 5.3
RB Joffrey Reynolds CAL 274 1596 9 5.8
RB Robert Edwards MON 278 1377 16 5.0
RB Kenton Keith SAS 189 1197 5 6.3
RB Joe Smith BCL 201 1075 10 5.3
RB Troy Davis EDM 190 1060 4 5.6
QB Kerry Joseph SAS 104 654 4 6.3
RB Ricky Williams TOR 124 623 3 5.0

respectable numbers, not not exactly dominant

Robert Edwards was a NE RB a couple years ago, no?

So he ended up 8th in the league after being out how many weeks with a broken arm? I don't see your point. His average is right up there with everyone else with not even near as many carries.

Funnier yet is that the league only has 8 teams...6 of which make the playoffs

Also how did you actually have TWO teams named the Rough Riders in a league of 10 teams?
