Americans too fat to get medical care

WASHINGTON: More and more obese people are unable to get full medical care because they are either too big to fit into scanners, or their fat is too dense for X-rays or sound waves to penetrate, radiologists reported on Tuesday (July 25, 2006).

With 64% of the US population either overweight or obese, the problem is worsening, but it represents a business opportunity for equipment makers and hospitals, said Dr Raul Uppot, a radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

"We noticed over the past couple of years that obesity was playing a role in our ability to see these images clearly," Uppot said in a telephone interview.

Radiologists have have their own term for it when writing up reports: "These images are limited due to body habitus." - Reuters

They should just crank up the power on those machines and cook the fat off.

heheh I had this vision of a team of fat people like 30 or so dressed like horses, pulling me around in a chariot as I whip them repeatedly. I also have a long fishing pole with a hotdog dangling like 2 feet in front of them to provide inspiration.

It's all genetics!!! It's not their fault!! LOL I love it when pull the "genetics card" when confronted with their obesity.

Here's a little food for thought, no pun intended. IF the issue of obesity were based on genetics - it would be a world wide pandemic, not isolated to the confines of our country's boarders. The US is the only country on the planet that has such a high rate of obesity... your genes aren't causing the problem. You stuffing donuts and Big Macs in your face and not lifting a finger to work out daily IS the problem.

Sure, there might be a few cases where genetics may indeed play a role in someone's predisposition to being over weight. By and large, however, those people make up a tiny %age of the whole.

I honestly cant see how people could let themselves go so far.....far enough that they cant fit into medical equipment.
Now, I'm squishy, not thin and fit, and I cant stand mysef. I cant imagine getting any bigger than what I am now and people are running around weighing 400+. It's baffling.

You all ever see that documentary on Discovery? It might have been Discorvery Health, or even A&E - I forget which...

Anyway, it's called "The Half Ton Man." How in the hell do you let yourself get to over 1000 pounds?!?

One of the other guys the show talked about had actually gone from 1000+ to 180. Yes... one hundred and eighty from one thousand. Lost it all, got in shape... a year later he was back to 900 pounds.

Something else I noticed... people can make fun of ole Richard Simmons, but the man does wonders in getting people motivated and working toward being healthy. It's just to bad they can't control themselves and end up putting it right back on.

It was on Discovery Health. I watch the channel at night before bed. There are a lot of shows about fat people lately.
There was actually an interesting one about people with some disease that doesnt allow them to feel full. So they eat and eat and eat....something like ___ Willy's Syndrome. It was neat.
In that same show, 1/2 ton man, there was a smaller story about a woman who was the largest woman recorded and she got help from Richard Simmons. Aside from the massive amounts of loose skin she sports, she is a "regular" sized woman now.

Darcler said squishy and it made me giggle.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

*sigh*

fat people make me sad.

fat people who are okay with--or even proud of!--being fat make me angry.

it is not impossible to lose weight and keep it off, trust me. just takes hard work and determination and discipline... unfortunately, those three things are traits that fatties don't really possess, at least not until they're good 'n' ready.

ugh. :(

Richard Simmons is a great guy, and a New Orleans native. He's an easy target, but he is an asset to humanity. Almost like a little fit afro'd gay jesus.

And, part of the funniest Whose Line Is It Anyway ever produced.

Enjoy!

Sell out.

On a more serious note, I see where you're coming from but it doesn't make me angry. I'm ok with people being ok with the way they are. I'm not there yet to be making any judgement but I get you. I've lost almost 100lbs since EQ, but I still need to lose more and I'm also trying to quit smoking. I work out, eat healthy and lean towards a more natural (vs chemical) diet but I'm still fat, yet I'm happy with myself. Can you blame me?

oh jay how well we understand each other!

but ya, i just mean people who put their health at risk by being so overweight but still seem proud of it. having a "little bit more to love" isn't a big deal; hell, i could still stand to lose 20lbs. but at least i can fit in hospital machines (and airplane seats, which will be an exciting new thing for me the next time i get to fly--haven't done so since fatty days).

I think that healthy is good but too muscular is gross. When I am ruler of the world, I will close down all fast food chains and use them as vegetable stands.

haha that would be a lot of fun

i wish i was rich so i could jet around and visit fun people :(

as far as fat and happiness goes, it's not like i'm not going to befriend an overweight person or anything silly like that. i just know what they're missing out on, now. besides which, our society is an awful place to be overweight--people can be really harsh, especially if you're young. fat kids have a really rough time of it :/

When my ex left me and the kids, I jumped in the car and traveled across the US to my grandma's. I met a few friends from EQ on that journey and it only cost me a few hunred bucks including food, gas, and one night in a hotel room.
It was the best thing I could have done.
