Cross-country road trip

Postby Harrison » Sun Aug 27, 2006 10:39 pm

On bicycles! (21 speed)

My friend and I are seriously doing this early spring/late winter.

I am in charge of plotting a "rough" course and figuring out supplies since I am the nerd.

I am curious if anyone has any experience with this type of travel. I am also curious who wants to meet us on our way. We have all the time in the world for this trip and it is a life-long dream of mine to accomplish this personally.

Hand-held GPS is a necessity in my eyes although he disagrees (mainly because he's electronically illiterate)

If you've done this sort of thing please post some pointers I may have missed while thinking this through.

Head South early.

The sooner you get down there, the sooner you'll be able to hit roads that travel straight for a long while. You'll also want to be able to travel with lots of water / fluids carried. Getting through the desert from Texas to California will be a tough trek.

After reading your post again and my post again I came to the conclusion that you'll probably die.

How do you get home again after you make it across? Do you have to complete the trip again in reverse?

Oh, and a first-aid kit will be a must.

Are you going to be riding through the detroit area ? I would think gps was a good idea. Do you have a gun ? Maybe im just bein nutty but theres a lot of middle of nowhere out there and a lot of twisted people. Riding a bike like that sounds like misery to me but ones pleasure ...... anyway if you ride your ass through detroit im sure me and tugg can spring for a 40 or some shit for ya.

Go along the northern US through the Dakotas & Montana and end up in WA. That'll be a lot nicer than trying to bike through the south & the deserts. Pretty scenery too :)

Not going to bring a gun because I don't want to even contemplate how firearm laws change state to state. I will be bringing a knife for various reasons. Mace will be on hand.

We're going to have those Camel Packs for hydration. I'm sure it won't be that difficult to find places to fill up day to day. If not, we'll have the money to buy water anyways.

We're not going through the upper U.S. on the way out, will be a bad time of year to do so. My plan is to hit Florida, say hi to a good friend that moved down there, and then head across from there. (Early spring by this point, won't be THAT hot)

As for bringing shit with us, I'm thinking of something like this...

Waterproof, lockable, 100lb capacity etc.

He has been drinking a lot of alcohol so the trip shouldn't be a problem.

i was going to say, please please PLEASE be sure that you're physically able to handle it. don't misunderstand me, i'm not saying this because i think you're unfit or unable to handle it--i just don't want you to get hurt or to overwork yourself. the best thing you can do now is to START TRAINING. ride a lot, do weight training, get in a lot of cardio... just get into as peak a condition as possible.

reconsider that 100lb trailer, also, because that will be a bitch.

our cool uncle mike did something similar--rode a very long distance nonstop (well, except for nights obviously) and he was nearly dead when he reached his destination. it makes for an awesome story, though (in that respect i am jealous of the adventure you are going to have!!) and he tells it every now and again. i'll ask my mom to email me the tale and then i will post it, it's funny.

anyhoo, just be sure you're physically ready for it... everything else will be easy to figure out.

oh, and stop in lincoln or i will find you and kill you. :P

As for me, I don't smoke, I am quitting drinking by the end of this month (August).

I am starting my workouts again. My roommate better get his ass in shape and quit smoking.

You guys should do a test run across the town or state or something first. Make sure your crew can hang.
