A competent hairdresser could give you tips on doing your hair npnp.

Come out here for a visit and I'll hook ya up with my friend Joan. She really knows hair and I love that she does my family for free. :)
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

It's the style moreso than the actual curl really. Martrae is spot on about finding a competant hairdresser. With the right cut, your curls are fine. It's just in that one pic of you and your friend, the style is more little girl-ish instead of sophisticated (which I am assuming is what you are wanting to shoot for).
Don't get me wrong - you are gorgeous any way you cut it ;)

Hah! You are going to hate me after this weekend then; I'm getting it all chopped off (and Jj is not pleased).

Since you have curls, get a perm and go for an afro in red.

do you think getting my curls relaxed would be helpful, or would it do more damage than it's worth?

Leave your curls alone, it would look fine, and you could always use a straightening iron when you want it straight

I agree with this...but I disagree with the curls-thing. The pic of you in the purple top is gorgeous, that hair is beautiful!! When I think of it being dark red and blonde highlights with that style, I can see you looking amazing. NOt that you already don't!!

I also like the pic with the shorter hair, the one where it's straight and the length is near your collarbones. Since your jawbone, cheeks, eyes and smile are so prominent, you can wear short hair. However, I don't think I like it being that length-I would go a little shorter even, just so that a *little* bit of your neck shows. Break it up by having some side bangs that rest on your cheekbones and in the very back have some layers so that if you decide to wear it straight, you can kick it out, or lay it flat/straight or tuck it under. If you leave the sides a little longer (not too much of an angle that look is getting tired and punk) then you can still pull it back into a ponytail. Remember to keep that option-ponytails are necessary.

if you wanted to wear it curly, it still works, and curly hair looks amazing when it's pinned up. good luck with what you decide!

and...sorry I sound like I could write in those shitty magazines because I hate those magazines and would not read my own article.
