I wonder what the legal precedent is here. Can these MMO developers claim that they are the law and establish rules for the community when dealing with things that have a huge value outside the game?

Can anyone with a law background shed some light on this?

I think like any other online game... don't give your stuff to people you can't explicitly trust.

The MMO developers definately could do something, but not a lot more than banning the dude

I think Eve's actually been smart in allowing stuff like this happen
in a lot of ways, Eve is the best MMO out there in terms of being open ended, and allowing the players to decide how the game is played

What I mean is, something of value was taken from someone without his consent. Does it matter that it was virtual? If someone hacked someone's online poker account and took all his money would it be any different?

They handed him their money. It was a legal transaction. There was no contract signed. Just a verbal agreement made over the internet. Scams in eve are not a new thing. Every time in the past they have allowed the virtual economy to lay on its own. This just brings it to a new level.

i know what you're saying, but nothing happened outside of the rules of the game in this case (like naethyn said)

i know there's been some legal shit going on in taiwan I think, where people have taken scammers to court over stolen shit, but i don't think any real precedents have been set

Not exactly. In Eve you make money, similiar to other games; WoW=gold, EQ=plat and so on. However, it is a game about corporations, so money is god. This guy basically took the people's money and sold them "insurance" gave them interest like a real life bank and what not, he just ninja-looted the player base like a mother fucker.
