Yah, I just saw this on another message board, was kind of fucked up because people were laughing (including me) but hey...it is *kinda* funny. I mean not really, you wouldn't really admit to it being funny in the least.

but he died from a stingray barb to the heart, ABC reported on its Web site.

My first thought when I read he died from a stingray, I literally said "that's gay".

I then read that later on in the article and almost shit myself.

sucks to see him go, but i can picture him saying "what I'm gonna do is sneak up on it and jam my thumb in its butthole." about 1 minute before finding out he can't move faster than a stingray underwater

Bummer :(

I am genuinely saddened by this incident. I am hopeful that there is a heaven full of crocs that he can wrestle.

That sucks. But, to be honest I'm actually suprised he made it this long. Grabbing Fierce snakes (most poisonous in the world) by the tail, poking at Funnel Web spiders.... wrestling with 800 pound crocs... sooner or later he was going to get either hurt or killed. It was just a matter of time. God knows how many close calls he had off camera, ya know?

Still though it's to bad - he was one of the few tv personalities that you could tell was genuinely a good person.

Yeah, it shouldn't be surprising given the high risk occupation he had. It's kind of like Jack Hannah was talking about. Seeing Steve handle such dangerous animals for so long kind of made him seem invincible. Now we know he wasn't.

My question is this. A sternum is hard to break. Doctors have to use special saws when preforming surgery. How did a stingray barb strike through his sternum and peirce his heart?

Probably slid between his ribs and hit it at an angle, who knows?

Anyways, if there is an afterlife, this guy definitely has one of the best "so how'd you die?" stories.

the sternum is just kinda the middle part of the chest where the rib cage joins

the heart is off the side

I didn't see anywhere where it said that the barb went through his sternum, specifically. All it says is it hit him in the chest, and put a hole in his heart, so the wound was likely in the upper left part of his chest where the heart is.

Either way, this sucks.
I so loved watching his shows.

It could be that the strike broke some bones and one of the bone pierced the heart. :mystery:

They've got it on film so if there really isn't any question of the story being true.

It's just sad really. I loved this guy. I wasn't doubting the validity of the story, I was just amazed at how he died. I always thought he would get squished to death my a very big snake, or eaten by a crocidile.
