do-whatever-you-want-as-long-as-it-makes-you-happy

Actually, I don't support that either, and I think I hold the title of resident liberal around here.

What would be a FAR more accurate quote would be the following:

Do whatever you want, as long as it makes you happy and doesn't hurt anyone else.

Someone smokes pot, and at the same time owns his own house here in Silicon Valley and holds down a job with a > 6 figure income, who exactly is he hurting by smoking pot? I'm not Christian, so I don't see any particular reason why 2 people of the same sex who love each other (or who lust for each other) shouldn't be able to be together and be happy. You want to watch TV/Movies, play video games or listen to music of whatever kind you freely choose as an adult, feel free.

The moment your fun harms other people though, that's where it has to stop. Personal responsibility is never something that you can toss aside, it's always got to be present. But even if what you're doing is harming YOURSELF, it's still your body, your life, and the government should have no right to gainsay you.

The only issue I have with letting people do what they want as long as it doesn't hurt others is that people, generally speaking, are too irresponsible to handle such freedom. Or, perhaps, just too damn selfish to care about the ramifications of their actions on others. Because of this, I can't help but keep a skeptical eye on this subject.

As far as issues such as gay marriage. Quite honestly, I think homosexuality is gross... however, it's not my place to tell two consenting, intelligent adults what they can and cannot do in the privacy of their home. Is it an issue, we as a country, really need to worry about? Fuck no it isn't. With all the bullshit going on in our society - jobs, education, crime - why in the fuck are we even wasting a single second debating the merrits of gay marriage?

As for drugs. Yes, weed SHUOLD be LEGAL, it's absolutely rediculous that it isn't. However, hard drugs SHOULD remain illegal. That's just my opinion.

You stated some time ago that you make $55k/yr. as a cell network builder. I make more than that driving a truck with a "mail order diploma" as you state.

What part of the big picture am i missing ? Life is way too short to not do what makes you happy. So if your not hurting anyone and meeting your obligations to society than where is the problem. No emot cons dont ignore me go ahead and let me know. Bonus points if you can tell me whats wrong with doing as you please without using religion.

allowing people to randomly break laws that they don't agree with personally is just wrong

doesn't matter how stupid you personally think the law is, it's the law

if you want to do something about it, run for office
until then, obey the law, or get shot in the face

Now ad to that huge oppisition from people that dont want that change and you really got a problem. As for voting for the other guy the other guy if hes not in the 2 headed snake party will have a hell of a time winning.

/sigh...sometimes I wish I was born elsewhere. I'm looking at houses now, a 1200sq ft with a garage and three bedroom in a decent neighborhood = $300k at a minimum.

300k here gets you a house with 3000+ finished square feet and a 1/2 acre to sit on. Move sir, move.

Nah, I see no point in moving away from my life, work, family, friends and home for a cheaper mortgage payment. I'll just suck it up :(

do what you want as long as you dont hurt others isnt a liberal tennant
it used to be a republican tennant before the religeous wrong took over

the idea of life liberty and pursuit of hapiness are ideals that harken back to our hemp growing founding fathers

the people who want to impose christian values tend to forget that there is a very good reason we dont have a state religeon in the united states

liberal idealogy such as it exists today is actually socializm where the government takes care of people because the people are too stupid to take care of themselves

the current conservative idealogy is the government takes care of people that promote a healthy economy (the rich) and hang the rest

both are wrong
