I really hate dentists

Postby Tikker » Tue Sep 19, 2006 3:17 pm

Went in to have a tooth extracted (long story short, genetically family has bad teeth, or for the science impaired god gave us bad teeth)

the last time I had a molar extracted, the surgeon cut the top off, sliced the remaining into 4 sections, and extracted 1 root at a time (we have bad crowns, amazingly good roots, super bad combination for extractions)

like most good surgeons, he knocked me out, did the work, then sent me home with 2 prescriptions, 1 for pain (yay) and an antibiotic

this knucklehead gives me local anesthetic, the uses the equivalent of a fucking crowbar, a screwdriver (i'm not kidding) and some fucking pliers to attempt to fucking rip the molar out of my lower jaw in 1 piece!

2 hours later he decides that maybe cutting it up some is a good idea

asshat slips twice, cutting my tongue bad enough for stitches in 2 spots! (5 stiches total!) and an hour later bam, roots are out

so he finishes up, says, "there you go, have a good day" and sends me home

no pain killer
no antibiotic
and doesn't even wash the fucking blood off of my face

jeje, i'm fucking in pain, and pissed off all the same time

I hate the dentist. Any dentist who wants to work in my mouth will be knocking my ass out.

oooo nice...my forte!

1-people do genetically have bad teeth however it's funny how every single "they pulled my tooth" story gets blamed on how bad your teeth are..genetically
;)

2-"the last time you had a molar extracted" ...wow...you're down two, how many more can you afford to lose? you should consider the fact that when you lose a tooth, you not only lose that tooth but the bone support also and surrounding teeth begin to shift, upper teeth will grow down into their missing space, as teeth grow until they have something to occlude against. you should also consider how you're going to replace these teeth (implants? bridge? partial?) and if your dentist hasn't discussed a treatment plan with you I'd find a new dentist.

3-you mentioned that the surgeon knocked you out, yada yada...but that this guy didn't do that for you. Well, you either didn't see an oral surgeon this time, but instead let the general dentist pull your tooth, and that would explain why they didn't do IV sedation. Most general dentists do not offer IV sedation however it is on the rise. They are definitely becoming aware of the want for it. -or-you did see the oral surgeon (obviously not the same one as before) and you opted not to get the IV sedation.

this knucklehead gives me local anesthetic-this is done no matter what. even if they knock you out, you still get anesthetic. didn't they at least have some nitrous you could sniff??

the uses the equivalent of a fucking crowbar--this is called a curette and it actually loosens the attached tissue surrounding the tooth. (your gum) and oral surgeons use these also.

a screwdriver (i'm not kidding) this is an elevator---there are several kinds, but they "elevate" the tooth by using it as a wedge against the surrounding bone, and it breaks the attachment from the periodontal ligament (what surrounds your roots in bone) and oral surgeons use these also

and some fucking pliers to attempt to fucking rip the molar out of my lower jaw in 1 piece!--the pliers are called "forceps" but yah they're pretty much pliers. You take those and "rock" the tooth back and forth to loosen it from the bone socket and then ultimately removing it in one piece. and yes, OS use these also.

2 hours later he decides that maybe cutting it up some is a good idea--your dentist worked for two hours to get your tooth out? You should have at that point definitely asked to be sent to an oral surgeon. who the hell are you seeing that can't section a tooth in less than two hours? black people have dense bone, their teeth can be difficult to pull because of that, but I've never seen anything take that long even in a difficult/complicated extraction.

asshat slips twice, cutting my tongue bad enough for stitches in 2 spots! (5 stiches total!) and an hour later bam, roots are out---oral surgeons slip all the time you just don't know it when you're out. you think they tell you?? haha...

man I'm not *really* giving you shit just fucking with you but seriously, I wanted to tell you some stuff you didn't know, and what you did know-which is obviously that you need a new dentist. ;)

oh! and that you need to call the office you went to, get the emergency number, call the doctor at home, or on their cell, whichever number they give you at the answering service/answering machine, and tell them you are in pain and you need something and they have to call it in or meet you at the office for a prescription. They can't deny you pain medication like that. I mean they can, but they can give you SOMETHING even if it's just Darvocet but in the meantime if you can take Ibuprofen that's what you should do.

And, bear in mind, that one of the MOST traumatic procedures on the body is the extraction of a tooth. It doesn't surprise me that you're in pain.

I'm not going to deny that I haven't taken as much care with the teeth as possible, but genetics do play a part smartass
;)

2-"the last time you had a molar extracted" ...wow...you're down two, how many more can you afford to lose?

eh, i dunno technical terms, last one that was yanked was a wisdom tooth I guess

3-you mentioned that the surgeon knocked you out, yada yada...but that this guy didn't do that for you. Well, you either didn't see an oral surgeon this time, but instead let the general dentist pull your tooth,

there's a reason I called 1 a surgeon and the other a dentist foolman ;)

I should see if I can get the xray's scanned or something. The roots in my teeth are bigger at the bottom than near the crown

the part that bothers me is that he didn't really even acknowledge the slips with the drill, or really explain that he'd goofed up some shit

when I went to the oral surgeon (for the wisdoms) he walked me thru the operation before, and again afterwards

both oral surgeon, and dentist said mine were the toughest extractions they'd had

I'm glad I have never had trouble with my teeth. As far as I know, my family (at least on my mother's side) has good teeth. I'm adopted and don't know my birth father though.

you're probably right-but again, this tooth is still a molar and just remember how important it is to keep a tooth. (and to replace a lost one-you should have gotten at the time of your extraction, site preservation and you should see someone about an implant or at least a bridge. Extractions should only happen when a tooth is hopeless.

you'd think that dental sciences would have progressed in the last 100 years, jeje

I agree with you but they really have in the last twenty years come a LONG way than before then. Most people used to go when there was something wrong. When I was a child, I didn't see the dentist every six months and I didn't go until something hurt. Many children get traumatized this way. Adults are the same way, especially old school ones. they end up having traumatic experiences because they aren't preventative instead they wait until the tooth is so decayed that it has to be pulled.

which, if I had something really horrible happen to me I would probably be the same way. In fact I am a huge sissy in the dental chair and everyone at my office thinks I'm a pussy because I get nitrous for fillings. The way I see it, I'll take a cheap thrill over hearing my tooth being cut ANYDAY. and I'll take the headphones while you're at it, something like Marylin Manson's Beautiful People.

but yah-back to the topic, they have come a long way. xrays are digital now-they take the picture and it shows up right there on the screen. most doctors do not place amalgam (silver) fillings anymore-they leak, they make the tooth weak...etc. They use sealants to protect the pits/fissures in our teeth from trapping debris that causes decay. **no matter WHO you are-or how well you brush/floss-there's not a thing you can do about teeth that get cavities on the occlusal surface. (top part of the tooth with the grooves.) there's no way you can clean in there. so they place sealants in the grooves of the 10 and 12 year molars of the kids as soon as they erupt.

there's not a lot that's changed in other ways though-like the way stuff tastes, sounds, smells...a burning tooth is a horrible smell (though I like it oddly enough) and the xrays-very uncomfortable in the roof of your mouth and under the tongue. People HATE the dentist. We don't take it personally...we worry about the ones that like it.

I should see if I can get the xray's scanned or something. The roots in my teeth are bigger at the bottom than near the crown

yah that is freaky-see if you can send them. I would like to see that. I have crazy long roots, and they are curvy. Most doctors that see my xrays are like "don't ever ask me to root canal any of your molars because the answer is hell no"

the part that bothers me is that he didn't really even acknowledge the slips with the drill, or really explain that he'd goofed up some shit

when I went to the oral surgeon (for the wisdoms) he walked me thru the operation before, and again afterwards

both oral surgeon, and dentist said mine were the toughest extractions they'd had

the dentist really should have known better than to try that long with you, he sounds like a real ass. I would NEVER let someone past the front door without looking great.

anyway I am sorry your experience was so bad, I hope you got something for you pain and are feeling better...swish some warm salt water and you'll heal pretty quickly. and get a new dentist, someone with great staff that will take care of you. they're out there and I guarantee you they are less than 40 years old. stay clear of the ones older than that...just because of they old school ways they were taught. If they keep up with technology then, I'd be okay with it. but not many of them do. I've worked for someone who hand-dipped xrays and I've worked for someone who had digital radiography. they're both around.

I turn 38 this year, and I've had 2 small cavities my whole life. One as a teenager, and one last year.

Brushing and occasionally flossing does seem to work.
