KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Missouri mother is angry that her first-grader was suspended from school over a plastic toy gun.

"I asked her, 'You're going to suspend my son for 10 days for this? He cannot harm a soul with this,'" said Danielle Womack, whose son, Tawann Caskey, was suspended from Milton Moore Elementary School in Kansas City.

Tawann was suspended over a 2-inch plastic squirt gun.

"She told me it's a weapon, a little girl saw it and reported to a teacher that he had a weapon," Womack said.

According to Kansas City, Mo., School District policy, the squirt gun is a simulated weapon and a class IV, which is the most serious school offense. Principals claim to have no discretion in cases like Tawaan's. It is an automatic 10-day suspension.

"We ask our principals for safety of students and staff, and we do follow the code of conduct and do not give exceptions to Class IV offenses. We take it very seriously," the school district's Phyllis Budesheim said.

The incident will stay on Tawann's permanent school record. But Womack said her son does not understand why he's not in school.

"I think this could have been resolved in a different way. It's wrong to bring it school, but come on, he's 6 years old. This would not hurt a soul," Womack said.

The school district said it is all policy -- one that the school told students and parents about at the start of the year.

"We regret that this happened. My feeling is that by not giving any exceptions, this young man will not bring a toy gun to school again," Budesheim said.

The school district said that the incident should be a reminder to parents to check their children's backpacks before they go to school.

Womack will state her case before a school district hearing Wednesday morning.

Gotta look at the picture of this gun,it doesnt even have a trigger haha. When i was a kid in 1st grade and i think also in 3rd grade,i believe it was twice, at the end of the school year we had a few classes all bring their squirt guns to school and played on the playground with them. It was a riot both times. fast foreward a decade + and columbine and here we are. Its sad really. Can you believe that fucktard i put in bold? my gosh.

"The school district said that the incident should be a reminder to parents to check their children's backpacks before they go to school."

Remember parents, ALWAYS perform a cavity search on your child, you never know when theyll bring in a 5cent injection molded squirt gun they got ina crackerjack box and go on a rampage.

If one thing riles my ass up its this zero tolerance bullshit. Instead of dealing with the problem, seperate this poor kid from all his friends for a few weeks of school and make sure he doesnt learn. Pathetic. And what problem is it anyways>< tell the kid no more fuckin squirt guns in class and call his mom to let her know what happened, case solved and possible lifelong negative impact avoided. What ever happened to no harm no foul.

While I don't agree punishing the kid because he obviously doesn't know any better, the parents are retarded for letting him bring it to school.

Certainly if they let him they are. The things so small it really wouldnt be hard to sneak it by his parents and im sure all the parents on this board can attest to the trouble kids can get into the second you turn their backs on em.

Ahh...but unfortunately the 'sometimes' indicates not always. With zero tolerance it doesn't matter if the banned item is for a play or to actually hurt someone...the kids are treated the same regardless.

A squirt gun? Use some common sense, confiscate it and forget about it. Having it taken away will make a bigger impression than suspension for a kid that age anyway.

you misunderstand what I meant

certain rules make sense for zero tolerance, certain rules don't

i didn't mean you sometimes apply the rule

WGAL wrote:The district overturned a 10-day suspension for a 6-year-old boy who brought a plastic squirt gun to school.

"They made a good decision. Everything is OK," said Daniella Womack, whose son Tawann Caskey was suspended.

On Monday, the first grader was suspended for bringing a two-inch plastic squirt toy to school. Womack said a school official told her that the gun was a weapon and that a girl saw it and reported to the teacher that Tawann had a weapon. That caused the school to suspend the child for a mandatory 10 days.

Since Tawann was suspended on Monday, the first-grader's story has caught the attention of many across the country. Community activists voiced their opinions on the issue.

"I think we went overboard with the gun-in-school thing. These people should use common sense," activist Mark Porter said.

The school district stands by its policy -- automatic suspension for bringing any toy to school that looks like a weapon.

"The code of conduct, as it stands for this school year, will remain," said Phyllis Budesheim of the Kansas City, Mo., School District.

The boy's mother said that she lost her temporary job because she had to stay home with Tawann. But she said she has found another job and can start working when Tawann goes back to school Thursday.

hahaha

I will name my first born Darth Miller . If you think about it,lots of parents live vicariously through their children. My child will fulfill my dream of wearing a black cape 24/7. He will be a whirlwind in the trailer park of society's expectations.
