does this mean we have to change the shape of squirt guns and start calling them something else?

i dig the whole zero tolerance thing, man, but squirt guns? come on.

we had big hefty super soakers when i was growing up, and i turned out fine. i'm one of the most nonviolent people i know! people are walking a thin, thin line between cautious and paranoid these days and i don't think they're on the right side anymore.

i got some forward one time that was talking about all the things that used to be allowed in the past (riding bikes w/o helmets, soap that wasn't antibacterial *gasp*) and how those generations made it through just fine. why the hell do we try so hard to control all the variables in our lives? just let things be, man.

Antibacterial soap is really bad for you. It really messes up your natural immune system.

weird how life expectancy is way up, birth deaths way down and whatnot since people started trying to control the variables

That's not completely true. It does kill off the normal flora on your hands, but that's about it. Using antibacterial soap isn't going render you immuncompromised.

Generally speaking, it's not a bad idea to let your kids get dirty so they get exposed too bugs - thus they don't grow up with a weak immune system. So, if that cookie falls on the floor - let 'em eat it - so long as the floor is completely covered in filth.

But to say that antibacterial soap messes up your immune system isn't true.

You're right...I should have clarified my statement.

Terrapin is one thing...but she calls him Oz, so I don't think he'll have any problems.

What is he going to do? Shank them? Or just tell them to pay no attention to the man behind the curtain?

and i understand that side, too... i guess i just don't like how it seems like we're trying to live forever, y'know? it's unnatural, imho. if life expectancy goes up and up, and birth death rates go down and down, we're going to be elbow to elbow pretty soon, not having enough room for everyone. just doesn't strike me as a good way to do things.

i also take issue with how many pills old people take daily just to keep on living. i think i'd rather die at an earlier age than have to rely on a pill cocktail to keep me going from day to day. /shrug

to me, it seems like we're interfering too much. just me, i guess.

Are you against all the shots we give to infants? Wouldn't that be considered interering? How about healthcare in general? That just interfering.

no, i don't disagree with that.

i'm not explaining myself very well ;\

i don't mean i'm against interference altogether... i just think that there's a line between good interference and too much interference.

i'm not being very articulate today, and for that i apologize. i truly wish i could explain myself better, but i have a feeling if i try too hard i'll come across sounding like spazz. :(

Don't be so hard on yourself, you're a woman and women generally lack any form of logic and rational thought. Just take comfort in the fact that you didn't have a choice in the matter.

[quote]Researchers from the University of Michigan, Tufts University and Columbia University studied 224 households to determine whether household use of antibacterial cleaning and hygiene products is an emerging risk factor for the carriage of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (search) on the hands.

The researchers randomly assigned the households to use either antibacterial or non-antibacterial soap and cleaning products for one year. The active ingredient in the antibacterial products was triclosan (search), which has been found to be effective in reducing and controlling bacterial contamination when used properly.

The researchers reported in the October issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases that, “The results from our study do not implicate use of antibacterial cleaning and hygiene products as an influential factor in the carriage of anti-microbial drug-resistant bacteria on the hands of household members.â€
