I'd argue in some aspects they were worse. During the crusades the vast majority of catholics were not only supportive, but thought of the crusades of something along the lines of a heroic adventure, and I don't believe that in the Muslim community there is the same level of support for terroisim.
That being said.. really what difference does it make? The catholics now are not the catholics of old, the Catholic Church now is not the same as it was in medieval times. People speak out in condemnation of the perversion of Islam, and the actions of radical fanatics with twisted views because it's wrong in the here and now.

it's more the hypocrasy of certain folks who put forth the evilness of 1 religion for certain acts, when their own religion has a history of doing the exact same
At least Catholics from the dark ages have the excuse of living in a time period where there was extremely little access to books and no real means of long distance communication.

OK, so Muslims think they have a shot at 'paradise' but are going to end up burning in hell. Catholics think they have to suffer in 'purgatory' before having a shot at heaven but they are also going to burn in hell. So, what's the difference?

It could easily be argued that a large portion of these people don't exist in a world with television, radio, the internet, libraries, etc...
